I could type a novel on this subject. Please beware, be careful, and report questionable activity as much as possible to any/all relevant authorities. Price, marketing, and even a sprawling property does not necessarily denote a trustworthy seller.
Let me add this to your excellent post. Buy only from breeders who SHOW their dogs and who have finished champion breeding stock. Or at least one parent be a champion and the other pointed. Go over the pedigree thoroughly - if no pedigree to examine and no AKC papers to examine, do not buy from the person.

Agree agree with this & prior post from Opinion In
Ocala. I've bought 3 dogs from the same breeder in South Florida--all great dogs and all showed the careful thought put into pedigree research exemplified by their health, temperament and structure.

However, it's my experience far too often that the typical future dog owner rarely decides on buying from a breeder due to 2 main reasons--price & availability. These hobby breeders don't run a production line the way poor breeder do that keep breeding and breeding. And when puppy buyers do find a litter from a responsible breeder, they are shocked by the price, not realizing the costs incurred to screen the sire and dam and compete in shows & trials & other performance tests. Little do they realize that if they only spent a thousand more on the front end, they could be saving themselves thousands of dollars of misery on the tail end, with an unhealthy puppy that costs far far more.
