If you want some land, you might want to look north of Ocala. Lots of open land and farms up there. I have 10 acres and a 10 year old home; my homeowners insurance is $1100 a year.

I will look north a tad...but I really like the area around Crystal River, Inverness, and Dunnellon so far....less crime too it seems.....so do you like your choice of living in Ocala Carnivalday?? Any regrets? Thinks to be mindful of? Don't seem like there are many towns north of Ocala until you get to Gainesville when I look at a map...Really curious though about the areas around Dunnellon, Crystal River and Inverness....

Ive been here 15 years, and love it. It is a slower way of living, but I like that. There is so much to do within a few hours drive, you will never be bored.

The Crystal River area is really nice. Have friends who live down there.

Duke energy is quite reasonable. A decently constructed and insulated 2,000sqft single-story home built within the past ten years will probably have low/high annual energy bills of $120.00/$260.00 (+/- $20.00) if the thermostat averages between 76-78 degrees or so throughout the year and your a/c unit is in both good condition and is an appropriate size for your home. If you had Ocala electric, your bill would likely be twice as much.

The cost added by the pool will of course vary depending upon the size of the motor, and how much its being run. A 20,000 or less gallon pool will probably run $45 - $75 dollars each month you run the pool, if run for 8 hours per day. If the pool doesn't already have a variable-speed pump, it may be worth looking into as they tend to pay for themselves in two or less years and can last well beyond that time frame with regular maintenance. A quality brand will have at least a 2-year warranty so in the worst case scenario, the consumer is often out nothing (if not ahead).

As far as Silver Springs Shores is concerned, like most places it just depends on where in the Shores you live -- along with your budget. My wife and I live in SSS, I have some clientele who live in SSS, and I know about a dozen LEOs who live in SSS as well, so I have a pretty good perspective on the area. Some of it is 'hood-rat central' while other areas are full of lower to upper-middle, or even upper class folks. You can find properties from $40k to over $3 million in the SSS area, somewhat depending upon whether you're looking in 34472 or 34480.

It's been almost 8 months since you first asked about Ocala, have you made any headway yet? The only part of the Ocala area I'm familiar with is the Villages.

You seem concerned with costs, which is why I didn't mention the Villages. But depending on your expectations and your budget, it might have what you're looking for. It's a planned golf-cart community, with some pretty strict HOA rules and regs. Most of them exist to keep the place consistent - but that's definitely not for everyone. It's definitely not for the guy who wants purple siding on his house and a fake wooden well with plastic flamingos on his front lawn.
