Been in Ocala for some time now in the general Marion Oaks area.

TL/DR: Can I have Brighthouse for Internet, and either DirecTV or Dish for Pay TV?

I'm seriously trying to reduce my cable bill, but due to family concerns we can't just stop the pay tv side. My wife has to have her international channel(s).

We are currently with Brighthouse. Service wise we are happy. Internet has been fantastic with Brighthouse, and cable ok. However, the price just went up 20/month on top of other recent increases.

So now I'm looking for options. I want to keep Brighthouse for internet, they are the best speed/price going in the area as far as I can tell, and in my personal experience cable internet is far better than any DSL offering.

I was wondering if anyone has kept Brighthouse for internet and was using another provider for Pay TV? DirectTV's international package is significantly better than the one offered by Brighthouse. The channel may cost more, but you get just about ever free to air tv from her favorite foreign country.

I'm looking at saving about 20 bucks if I split the internet and Pay TV this way. Even after losing the bundling discounts. However, DirecTV has yet to earn my trust.

Another alternative is to go with the new Sling service Dish will be offering in March. We could drop everything but the internet. I'd then move the phone to Ooma or a similar service. Outside of the kids channels, mainly Disney xd and Nick offerings, free to air channels, and the international channel we don't really watch much tv.

So, has anyone split their internet and pay tv? How well does it work, how happy are you with it? Any gotchas or installation BS?

I am a BH customer as well. I have found that if you go to the BRIGHTHOUSE office in Belleview in the KMart shopping center on 301/441, they can usually offer you a better package and lower your cost. Talking to BH on the phone is a waste of time.

I am royally po'd with BH for scrambling their entire line up, necessitating a Digital Adapter or set top box for every tv. Especially considering that their " customer informational insert " clearly stated that some basic channels would NOT be scrambled ......and worse.....INSISTING that it was the federal government that made them do it. Don't BS a BSer. I no longer can have a tv wherever I have a jack. It sucks, but I refuse to pay extra. I have learned to get along with one tv and my iPad. Oh well.

Anyway....I still have them for everything...and yes cable trumps anything else for internet, but as soon as HBO goes independent, I may cut the cable for TV seeing as my Smart TV can do Netflix and Amazon. I don't like satellite as it seems it goes out just as the weather gets bad and the pricing seems to be bait and switch. A low price for the first year, but only with a two year contract.....

While I am reading here ... If I would like to hook up on cable internet service then is there Comcast available in Ocala?

Where I am now in New England I have been paying $77 a month for high speed internet service from Comcast. I just wanted internet and no TV. But what is great is that Comcast provides free Norton Anti Virus with their plan. Great anti virus and saves some money I would imagine.

How does this compare to Brighthouse??

Comcast is available in some parts of Ocala. Cox and Century Link are also in the area depending upon where you live. Brighthouse is basically a Belleview selection, though Brighthouse is now owned by Comcast.

Who your cable provider will be will depend on which part of Ocala you are in. Best to check with Zillow or a Realtor, potential neighbors, or start a thread with a certain area or street name, or to ask the company. Though sometimes the companies don't even know what lines they own. Knew a friend half a mile from our old house, and his side of the street did not have cable. So best to check and verify.

Brighthouse will be about 70+ for 30up and 2down. Better than any dsl offerings in the area.

As for me, I can't get a replacement for the international channel so I'm stuck with cable. Might be able to get a better quality international channel deal from another provider and keep Brighthouse for internet, but dollar savings are my main motivation here, so not worth it to me to move.

In other news: I have seen no announcement of Comcast owning Brighthouse as of yet.

Just checked Newsroom

and

News + Information

and a basic google search https://www.google.com/#q=time+warne...merger&tbm=nws

As far as I can tell no merger between Time Warner and Comcast has happened. If they merge, Comcast will own Brighthosue, the same way Time Warner does 70% and mainly their programming and infrastructure. In other words the decent service Brighthouse offered will be in serious jeopardy.

Actually just read this:

Charter to buy Bright House cable - Orlando Sentinel

Looks like Charter has put in a bid for Brighthouse, though I don't know if that is any better.

Yeah, I had Charter/Comcast swapped. Thanks for the correction.

No worries now. I was really concerned I had not heard about Comcast buying them. I've been trying to catch that before it happens.
