We're a retired married gay couple looking into moving to Citrus County. We've gotten conflicting info through the internet on whether or not this is a good move. Any thoughts?

Specifically, we're wondering if Citrus County is gay friendly or at least tolerant. We know Ocala is more cosmopolitan than the county in general. Any towns within the county that are better than others for gays? Is there an homophobic atmosphere that would make it uncomfortable to live there?

My husband and I stayed two winters at a RV Resort a little east of Ocala run by a gay male couple. I saw no homophobia at all. Everyone liked them and not one person said anything negative about them. It was a large Resort with people from all over. What I know turns a lot of straight people off are gays showing physical affection for each other such as holding hands or kissing in public. They don't want to see that or their children to see it.

If you're nice to most people they will be nice to you in return. If not, ignore them. Just like there will always be racists, there will always be homophobes.

I agree with you that folks with different perspectives are everywhere. That's what makes life interesting, but there's also no point or sense in living in a place where one isn't comfortable. I appreciate your insight, but visiting at a resort is not the same as living there year round. What I really would like is comments from people who live in or very near Inverness.

BTW, the gay couple running the Resort do live there year round as do many of the other residents. They're from somewhere up north and love the area so it must be gay friendly.

Sorry, I know nothing about Inverness. Perhaps someone else does. I hope you find what you're looking for.

Hi you’re asking a very interesting question I’m Michael from NJ a single gay man considering moving to citrus county Fl (Beverly Hills area)as I have some family there. I’m very concerned about the gay environment in that area I know nothing about it and it seems like there isn’t much to do to be able to even meet gay people

As a fellow gay male who doesn't identify as a redneck I would suggest looking a bit further northeast in Ocala. It's not a major metro area but their is a significant enough gay community to make friends in and close enough (45 minutes) to home should you decide to live in Beverly Hills. Otherwise you could find somewhere to live on the desirable SW side of Ocala and split the difference.

FYI: Beverly Hills, FL is SW of Ocala and is closer to Homosassa and Inverness, FL. I used to drive through the community to go to my specialist Veterinarian in Homosasassa.
