I'm late 20's and looking to move to Ocala for 6 months to a year due to the fact that the cost of living is cheap and it still has the type of clubs, activities, sports I like. I need to keep overhead costs low while I build a business.

Ocala is way smaller than I'd like, but I don't want to pay rent in Tampa Bay.

My question boils down to this: Will I be in hell here? Should I run for the hills? Or is it doable for a young person for 6 to 12 months?

Second Question: Why is Florida so damn spread out? I'm from the Midwest and it seems that nothing, but nothing is centralized in this state. Commute times to my various clubs/hobbies is atrocious. Where I'm from I was driving 30 mins. max to get to where I needed to go. The Tampa Bay area is awful. I wish I could find it "all in one place" like I had up north but with great weather too. In this state proximity and convenience seem like a tough ask.

What's your budget? Something tells me you're going to want something more livelier than what Ocala will offer. Tampa is not that expensive in the grand scheme of things. Do you only plan to stay in FL for 6-12 months? It sounds like you might be miserable doing this and you already know that.

I'm going to be dead honest. My budget is "as cheap as possible while still being safe." I'm trying to bootstrap an online company to pay for graduate school. I'm not established yet, thus the cheap budget, heehee.

Where I'm from (Minneapolis) you could get a studio apartment for $600. Commutes (unlike in Tampa Bay) were really short though, so you save a lot of money on gas, etc.

How much could I get away with paying monthly in Tampa Bay?

EXTRA INFO: I love Minneapolis save for the atrocious winters. Florida seems so sparse and spread out to me - fewer chains, fewer high end restaurants, less culture without having to drive a long way, and more "one-off" shops (like along HWY 19 in Newport Richey) for example.

Also - I will stay in Florida until I get in to graduate school. The entire United States is the same to me as I spent a large portion of my youth abroad. Save for the weather I'm indifferent - the entire U.S. and all its cities to me seem like a question of "pick your poison."

I'm using it as a launching pad for larger, international endeavors. So to answer you question I guess I'll just stay in FL as long as it suits me, but I'd do the same anywhere else, haha.
