Definitely not a lifestyle changing question here, but I have a bet going on that says Ocala is pronounced Oh-Ka-La, with the first 'a' being "short" as in the word "back" or "cat". The opposite side of my bet says its pronounced Oh-Kah-La with the first 'a' sounding the same as the short 'o' as in "box", or as someone saying "aahhhhhhhh".

Is there anyone here who *really* knows, like a native person in the area? Or the official pronunciation cop?

Thanks much, I know I have too much time on my hands to dwell on this stuff, but I need to know.

The examples you gave confused me but its been a long day.

Ocala is pronounced Oh Cal Uh
As in the word oh, or letter o.
Cal rhymes with gal.
Uh as in "uh...I have no idea how fast I was going, officer."

Hope that helps!!

And I live about an hour from Ocala and have all my life.

Now, who is the winner of the bet?
