Is Crystal River a reasonable commute (45 min)? Or is it much further from the Villages?

Any advice from locals is appreciated.
Its about an hour drive, give or take, depending on what part of the Villages he is working in. I know TV can have some pretty bad traffic at times

It takes us about an hour to get to the Villages and we are 5 minutes from Crystal River. I have a friend who lives in Ocala but also has a condo on a canal in CR and she owns a business in the Villages. She swears it only takes her about 45 minutes.

Hope that helps!

I lived in Crystal River for one winter in a motorhome. It's a beautiful area. However at the time I was still looking for work and found that it was too far from most jobs other than service type low pay jobs. W. Fort Island
Trail is pretty small as well.

Hey, MA

Depends on where in the Villages and Crystal River. From the west side, it's about 45-60 minutes. East side...add another 15-20 depending on season and how you get there. Unless he can take SR 44 over, it is mostly 2 lane country roads with no street lighting. I love driving them, few traffic lights, decent speeds, etc, but to make that drive everyday? Not too sure I would want to do it for too many years.

I'm so glad to find this thread .....
I've been looking at Crystal River; knowing nothing about the area .... but desiring to be close to the Gulf.
I'm senior; 69, I work in real estate. I don't know that I'd continue if I relocate; but wonder if I could ask about the real estate market there?
I've been looking at properties on sites such as Realtor.com & Zillow. Are there any less desirable areas I need to stay away from?
Also, best and closest airport to make connections?
One more thing; I read a lot of negative things about the nuclear plant. Why is that?

Thank you!

I used to live in Inverness, which is about 20-25 south of Crystal River, and I can tell you from experience: it's convenient to nothing. The closest major airports are Tampa, about 95 minutes to the south or Orlando, about 105 minutes to the east. If you fly in and out of smaller regional airstrips then you can use Ocala or even Dunellon airports, but again, you're talking at least a 90 minute drive.

Part of the reason I left the area was a dearth of mid-level professional jobs. There's work if you're in health care; there's work in you're a low-level service person, but not much in between. The power plant shutdown has also adversely affected the economy. If you're planning on working, you'd better plan on it being part-time.

That being said, it's called the Nature Coast for a reason. If you like to fish, hunt, canoe, ride horses, or bike trails, it's a terrific area. The Citrus Wildlife Management Area is a beautiful equestrian and walking trail setup, and certain seasons allow hunting in there. It spoiled me completely for having wide, cleared horseback riding trails.

Good luck with your move!

Thanks, beatkay.
I wouldn't be traveling often...so the plus 1 hour drive time to an airport doesn't bother me.
I'm assuming the quality of life is positive .... And as for working; being a real estate agent, if I determined to continue; I'm ready to not be as aggressive as I have been.
So, the nuclear plant is no longer open; good, I guess. I had read a lot of negativity about it. If it was a big employer, I'm sure it has hurt the overall economy and real estate prices.

Do you have an idea as to utility prices?

Actually, if refer smaller communities and that is how Crystal River sounds. I love the idea of nature, love to walk, love horses.

Thanks again for your info and input.
