Hi everyone,

We are new to Ocala moving from Texas. My mother retired recently after I transferred with work and bought a small mini farm in SE Ocala, close to Belleview. I was hoping to get a variety of advice from those who have lived here or nearby for a while. We are enjoying Florida so far and have found many places to volunteer and really enjoy Church@the springs church. Is there a reputable place to have a small barn built? We plan on stopping at a couple of those building places you see on the side of the roads. We would like to get a small hot tub and in Ocala have only found places selling large pools. Any recommendations near Ocala or would this be easier and have several places to choose from in The Villages? Any great, honest, dependable handymen? Best horse farms or volunteer at? Possibly looking at a place to workout, co-workers like Anytime Fitness or Planet Fitness. Any advice you may have would be appreciated. I have asked some coworkers and they don't have any advice on these things. We are happy here and it seems many are not in Ocala. We want to make the best of everything and meet new people with similar interests. Thank you for your time and advice.

Hi & welcome!!

I can answer your handyman question. My husband owns Mr. Handy. If you have access to Angie's List you'll see he is A+ rated and has excellent reviews. We live closer to Crystal River but he has a lot of repeat customers in Ocala. He also has a business Facebook page where he's listed some pictures of recent work. It's under Mr. Handy of NCF - in Beverly Hills. He is busy so I think he's currently scheduling for July but he's very good about fitting in visits to meet with his clients in order to give estimates. His name is Shawn & his number is 352-445-5977.

Good luck & glad to hear you're enjoying Florida!!

I'm not as familiar with Marion County as I am with Lake County but live between the two now.

The only place I know that sells hot tubs is in Leesburg on 441 near the state park, probably too far away for you. There must be a place in Ocala? Likewise the Anytime Fitness I know about is in Baylee Plaza between Summerfield and Belleview. He has several locations though so I'd look closer to where you're living.

I'm glad you like the Church of the Springs. I have good friends who go there. They have a couple of locations that I know of, one near Silver Springs and a smaller one near the Villages.

There are two rescue horse farms on Rt 42 south of Belleview off 441 in Weirsdale both on the north side of the road. One is a couple of miles east of 441 and the other one (which is for sale incidentally and still has horses) is just past the intersection of 452. The later one looks like they could really use help and is in bad shape. My previous roommate use to volunteer at a horse ranch in Ocala. There are so many of them there I'm sure any would be up for extra help. The horse capital of the US they advertise Ocala as. There is a cross Florida trail for riding with a trailhead in Santos off 441 as well as trails thru the Ocala Forest.

Hope you enjoy yourselves here.

Also, I forgot to ask about a great veterinarian. We have 4 rescue dogs, three are older, over age 10. Thanks again.

Thank you. I think I know of the one you mentioned near Weirsdale, JnB or JMB horse rescue or horse haven. I talked to that lady and she said she had two farms, one near where you mentioned and one in Umatilla. Sounded like she has had some financial difficulties with many abused horses that she takes in. She wanted 100 to volunteer. We weren't expecting riding, just volunteering for now. I had to first get mom settled and everything squared away with work and schedules before committing long term with volunteering. We will call again and see if we can help with our time. Thanks for the other ideas, too. We aren't in a rush, but will check those things out.

Silver Springs Shores Animal Hospital 7121 SE Maricamp Rd 352-553-4639 Dr Arnone. He lets you go in the back with them as opposed to some places. Not far from the church.

For any big problems there's the Small Animal Vet Hospital in Gainesville at the University. They are wonderful and will do yearly checkups if you want them to. They also have an urgent care for animals in Ocala you can preregister with.

Hi Kelly:

Here is a suggestion and cost effective way to put up a small barn. Check out the Carolina Carports at
Belleview Portable Buildings 9355 S. US Hwy 441, Ocala, FL. Buildings are built to wind codes, come permitted and have several choices of design. Floor can be whatever you want and you can build stalls in it. For aluminum stalls and builder contacts check out Armourgates.com. Here is picture of our Carport. Small Vets I go to Dr. Kohen in Belleview at Camelot Animal Hospital by Pizza Hut in Belleview - He doesn't do surgery anymore, but recommends good vet for this. Check out the internet for Hot tubs into Orlando and Tampa for good deals. For Fitness check out the YMCA in Ocala and my favorite gym is at On Top Of The World called the Ranch Fitness Center and Spa. Hope this helps
