My husband is being transfer from Connecticut to Gainville, FL. I have been researching for a new home to purchase. Since i wont have a job right away when we relocate i have been looking at properties in Ocala. (they seem to be lower in price)
Can anyone tell me if Ocala is a nice place to raise two young children?
Does anyone know a rough estimate of how long it will take to drive from gainsville to ocala?
thanks, Mari

From the heart of one city to the heart of the other is about 39 miles. Consider that both cities have suburbs that tend to sprawl in all directions for nother 1-5 miles and you are looking at a driving time ranging from 23-47 minutes depending on traffic and exact starting/ending points.

Gainesville housing is very expencive, not including the home owners. The houses are alot older in Gainesville. The best area in ocala is 34476. Everything is new or newer and it is a wonderful place to raise kids. I am in my early 30's and i love it. My brother, age 28 and his wife and 2 kids, ages 8 and 9 are moving here next month.Even though my brother wife will still drive to work from Ocala to Gainesville, it is worth it. They were renting in Gainesville but could not find a house for 170 k to 200 k with 1500 sq feet or more. Ocala you can get a 3/2/2 new or newer home in this area code for around 180 k. Witch is awesome. All upgrades on these houses too..Just trying to help.

When considering Gainesville (I love it--Go Gators!) if you are looking for suburbs with lower costs of housing you should look into Alachua (the city not the county). It is really quiet up there and the homes are much cheaper and it is not as far away so a trip into Gainesville is not very far. Main street is quaint but not much going on there. Ocala is much much bigger but quite far away and traffic is awful on Friday/Sunday evenings due to the college students.
Also you can look into Williston or Newbery areas which are located around Gainesville but are more rural.

ummm, you might wanna re-check those prices...... the Shady area has some of the priciest real estate in Marion County....... the horse farms drive it up.....just did a quick Google search, and nothing came up for that price range.....

Mari,

I hope you're still checking this thread, but I am a Realtor in Gainesville and I just have to say that Gainesville is a wonderful town to raise two children. Ocala is also a nice town as well, but it is about a 45 minute drive on I-75 to Gainesville. I lived in Gainesville for 12 years, then moved to Atlanta for 10, and now I'm back in Gainesville again. It is a quaint old town based on traditions, culture and the University of Florida. There is lots to do; art festivals, museums, parks, scenic trails, unique shops, restaurants and theatre.
