We are a family of 4, two children ages 9 and 7 and are looking to move in March. We plan on renting in Ocala, Belleview, or any other "smaller" area. My husband is a disabled veteran and we are on a fixed income. We live in a very small upstate NY town, 4,000 people and are not interested in living anywhere with a population larger than Ocala. I have been reading a lot of mixed reviews about crime, safety, and the schools and am hoping to get some honest feedback regarding the areas as well as other areas that may be safer and have better schools, but still fairly inexpensive to buy a nice home, price range $100,000-170,000. We love the state of Florida and it has many benefits for us any advice would be greatly appreciated.

That's a tough one to answer. I understand wanting to live here. As a military family, there are definitely benefits to living in this area. The hard part is finding a decent rental with 2 kids. I wouldn't know where to start, honestly. And a re-lo from Upstate NY is going to be quite the culture shock but you probably know that already. It would be nice if you had some family in the area to ease the transition and give you a base to work from. Definitely stay out of Marion Oaks. Be extremely leery of the Shores or anything in the southeast area. Belleview schools? Don't know much, but a teacher I know schleps her kid over to Saddlewood everyday to avoid Belleview Elementary. Hopefully others will have more info. The hardest part is finding a landing spot, a starting place. Good luck.

The state grades all schools so look up the ratings on the state site.
You probably want to live outside the city limits of Ocala. The address will say Ocala but you will be in Marion County.
Utility rates and taxes can vary by location so be sure to check these before you move.
