Is it possible to have real grass up here? I moved to Ocala, and my yard appears to be composed of the same stringy grass that fills my pasture. I think it's called bahia. It's sparse, and it has a lot of weedy areas.

I would like to have something like Bermuda or even St. Augustine, but if those things grow here, I have to wonder why the house doesn't have nice grass already.

Could it be due to cost? The house we bought in Gainesville has St. Augustine in the front yard and zoysia in the back (which I know the prior owner installed). Grows great in the shade and fairly pest resistant.

When the house was for sale, the neighbors saw photos & I’ve received several compliments on the lawn. So many trees here that apparently most neighbors don’t have much grass, especially in the backyard. The front we all have to keep up in some way due to the HOA, but some do fight a losing battle.

Look at some of the larger over 55 communities and discuss with them what they use for grass.
As long as you water it you can have grass. Their is a maintenance schedule for chemicals, thatching etc.
I think you can also check the Univ of Fl as they do research on grass maintenance.
I think St Augustine has fallen out of favor but was used in the past. Current preferred grass might be zoysia.

Maybe I should see what I can do with zoysia. I had St. Augustine in Miami. It was okay, but kind of like crabgrass.

Bahia is a pasture grass. It has outstanding pest control, drought resistance. You basically can't kill it. It's zero maintenance which is why everyone in rural areas on acreage lots or with farm animals uses it. It's not economical or practical to fertilize and water large acreage.

It can grow very lush and thick. Most people don't like it because of the seed sprouts that look unsightly in the summer. It requires more frequent mowing than other grasses.
