I'm just starting out doing some research for my dad, who is based in Vermont. He has gone down to Florida every winter for the last 20 years, so he's quite familiar with many areas of Florida. But his current living arrangement down there is ending, and he will need to find housing for October/November through April, when he usually returns back north for summer.

He doesn't have the budget for a condo or anything in a high-end area, and he needs no "senior" assistance -- just a safe, clean apartment (even a room with kitchenette) where he is allowed to park his van and trailer for his motorcycle. (He likes his independence and intends to keep traveling, but he really needs a home base.)

He is a very independent and active 75-year-old and I am trying to dissuade him from his current plan, which is camping all over the state all winter!

I don't know anything about opportunities for lower-budget, half-year rentals in Florida so I thought I would ask here (he's currently based in Ocala but doesn't necessarily need to remain there). Does anyone know of any websites or agents in the Ocala area who cover this sort of market for older snowbirds? Or should I just check ordinary rental listings?

What do you consider low-budget? Low-budget doesn't mean the same thing to all people.

My suggestion is to contact a local Realtor who specializes in Summer rentals or can refer you to one who does.

This would be the high rent season. Maybe he can get a job house sitting for someone that has to be somewhere else and does not want to leave the house empty.

To repeat... he can't afford a condo. He would just be interested in a "normal" apartment (or even a room with kitchenette) whatever the rent for that would be.

No condo, no senior assistance, just a modest apartment or room in a safe neighborhood. A bedroom, a couch and a kitchen type thing.

Just ask a local Realtor to do a search. That would cost him nothing and would be a good starting point.

There are some listings on Craigslist, but you'd have to do some homework to ensure the areas in which the rentals are located are safe. CL can be very frustrating, but there are legit listings among the scams. You're more likely to find cheaper digs there than on the real estate websites.

Sometimes there are seniors who are looking to rent out part of their house, or a room with bath to make a little extra money. I noticed there is such an ad in the Villages.
