Does anyone know if petunias will survive Ocala winters? I don't care if they die back, but I don't want to have to replace them.

The house I bought had some landscape plants that I flatly refused to coddle and cover up last winter, so now that they've expired, I would like some colorful, TOUGH plants to replace them. They will be watered automatically, but other than that, they will probably not get a great deal of attention.

Frankly, if plastic plants looked convincing...

They'll do fine unless it's in the 20s for over 6 hours or so. Pansies and violetas can handle our temps too and will wilt once it's consistently in the high 70s or 80s. You won't have to cover them, and they should be fine. I'd advise buying from a more local landscape company like Ocala Landscaping or Superior. They're more likely to use more regional growers. The big box stores just ship stuff from all over, and you never know it the plants will be okay down here in the south.

Good luck!

They do rather well here. I prefer Wave Petunias. They trail nicely in pots and are profuse bloomers. Check my album for a pic of hanging teapots in January.

Thanks for the help. I didn't know petunias would bloom in winter. Sounds like they're ideal.

Petunias, pansies and snapdragons bloom all winter here in the Ocala area. I recently removed all the spent summer flowers and replaced them with pets, pans and snaps. All flowers do much better with some care such as being fertilized regularly.

The snapdragons surprised me by blooming on and off through the summer heat.

I have not been brave enough to plant pansies. I used to do my beds in Dallas with pansies for the winter, but am afraid it's not consistently cool enough for them here to not do well.

Does anyone know what you call those flowers with the spiky leaves and stalks of blooms in yellow, white and possibly pink (mostly I've seen yellow and white)? They seem to bloom in late spring, early summer. I think they might be a type of cactus. They're not aloe, but seem to be related.

Thanks, bk. I've been trying to find a pic online, but the right images are not coming up without a name. Some close, but no cigar. However, I found an old hand colored photo featuring these plants, so I'll photo that tomorrow and post. (I don't have a camera phone, got to drag out the digital camera and lighting and such, lol.) I do like the flora up here, great mix. Some beautiful flowers.

Never mind, I just found it. Yucca. Surprised they grow here, they're more associated with the southwest, but Florida does have certain cactuses and such. No pink (must've been my imagination) but stalks of white and pale yellow flowers.
