we will be in the Ocala area the beginning of February and would like advice on which part of the National Forest is nicest for a day hike? Love to see some varied ecosystems and birds. Also thinking of doing a day canoeing or kayaking and love a recommendation.Should we also do a day on the Gulf coast?

Post Silver River

The Silver River is right in ocala and it has four trails ranging from i think 1 mile to 5 miles. lots of birds although i'm unsure of what time of year is best for viewing. there is also a cracker house museum that is open only on the weekends.
Silver Springs is a nature themed theme park that is also on the river. i haven't been there in several years but people seem to like it.

here's some links:

You might also like the newly renovated Juniper Springs. You can kayak there as well. They have a wonderful boardwalk that runs along the spring run. It's out on SR 40 in the forest. As far as the Gulf Coast.. I think I would pass this far up. You might also look into Fanning and Manatee springs. Great trails, the springs, manatees, birds, and a great vista of the Suwannee River.

Depends on how adventurous you are...I've got a secret place - but is one of the most remote areas in Florida.
