Here is another thread on Ashtabula.

Yours Thoughts On Ashtabula

In short, the actual town of Ashtabula is a dump, but there are other places in the county that would be OK depending on what you're looking for. The lakeshore is nice and it would be a good area to live in if you want more rural and cheap. If you do want to live in the actual town of Ashtabula there are good areas near the lake (to the east of Lake Avenue) or south of Bunker Hill Road. If you want something on the lake in the general area than Geneva-on-the-Lake and Saybrook Township are pretty nice. Although, if you are just looking for a decent town on Lake Erie there are better options in Ohio.

What are some of the better, more attractive and popular towns on the Lake? Most of what I've seen is pretty rundown. I would like to find a nice town on the lake.

You could try Bing maps, center it on Ashtabula, and then use the bird's eye setting to get a "feel" for how things look there.

Port Clinton
Marblehead
Put-in-Bay (island tourist town)
Vermilion
Fairport Harbor
Geneva-on-the-Lake (tourist town)

Also Cleveland's western areas along the lake: Lakewood, Rocky River, and Bay Village.

Thanks, 5Lakes, and all. I was curious what towns were popular. I just found that Ashtabula and Lorain looked a little tired. I appreciate the responses.

I see where you're coming from then. Those are probably the two worst towns on Ohio's lake shore.
