As things go, working at a Wal-Mart ($10/hr, 30hrs/week, benefits) is better than famous manufacturing jobs (we've heard so much about). Famous Ohio manufacturers frequently offer $8/hr, no benefits for back breaking, unhealthy, dangerous work and they fill all the openings.

I've been in manufacturing all my life. Even 15 years ago, the average worker made about $12 an hour and most were able to get a reasonable benefits package. Today, the average is $14-15/hr. It's not enough, but it's far better than working at Wal-Mart.

Along with the above, the mere fact that you draw reference to the conditions of the early 1900's when speaking of today's working conditions indicates that you clearly know nothing about the general manufacturing environment in the US. Though you're usually expected to get your hands dirty, the jobs are generally decent paying, stable, and safe. That's why the openings get filled; people want the jobs and will do anything they can to not work at the low paying, undignified, limited benefit, Chinese retail outlet called Wal-Mart.

Ohio also has had the 4th highest job growth the past year. There should be a general Ohio economic/development thread here.

First, I've seen many more manufacturing plants than an average manufacturing worker. The 1900ish places offering the dirtiest, unhealthiest, the most dangerous work place pay the least, including $8/hr or hell knows what they pay to Mexicans. Provided equal wages with Wall Mart, it's common sense to run not walk to apply with Wall Mart if you are good enough for Wall Mart that is. There are no safer or healthier manufacturing plants than Wall Mart. BTW, at least in Ohio, Wall Mart medical insurance plan beats many insurance plans offered by more glamorous employers, I was surprised myself. Since, Wall Mart 30hrs/week workers generally qualify for medicaid, 80/20 Wall Mart insurance with $5,000 cap supplemented by medicaid = YOU WILL NOT BE BROKE paying your medical bills, you will not be denied medical care. Amazingly, 40hrs/week $10/hr manufacturing workers don't qualify for medicaid as easily or at all.

This ad represents well what Ohio manufacturing has become.

And I did see adds peddling $8.25/hr and $9/hr manufacturing jobs. After all, we the workers (except management, of course) are competing with China and its wages.
