Just doing a little research of the Youngstown, Oh area. I am interested in the outlying areas, suburbs, etc. School systems. Good places to raise a family (we have four kids). Any help is really appreciated!!

Before anybody can help you we need to know two things.

Where will you be working? That makes a difference for commute time.

Do you prefer land, or a housing development?

Price range would help too. I'm thinking Ellsworth, or Berlin Townships off the top of my head. Your preferences might change that though. Any thoughts on getting horses in the future?

Many of the suburban and rural districts surrounding Youngstown are rated very well. Austintown and Boardman are large districts, whereas others, such as South Range and Springfield are much smaller. Boardman will have more (and perhaps better?) classes/programs to choose from than the smaller ones, but smaller districts have their advantages as well. Depends on your preferences...

Boardman and Austintown also are very much city schools where children are exposed to a lot more than they should be very early on versus the smaller, rural, more wholesome schools such as Crestview, Western Reserve, West Branch, South Range, or Springfield.

I student taught at one of the "wholesome" schools you mentioned and while I will say that the students were very well-mannered and polite, they were one of the most bigoted, intolerant groups of kids I've been around. I personally feel that it's good for kids to be exposed to the diversity of "city schools" like Boardman and Austintown. But to each his own...

We currently live in a rural area that is slowly becoming suburban. My Husband would be working at V & M Star. We would like to be out of the city, but not more than 15-20 miles in any direction. We still haven't found out his salary which makes the house hunting at a stand-still. Currently, I'd say $135,000 max. But that could change. Thanks for your help so far, everyone. Its a candle in the dark!

Is that what you're looking for around Youngstown? There are plenty of places like that within 15-20 miles of the city.

You should have plenty of options at that price. That would get you a good sized house in an nice, established suburban neighborhood, a decent house with some land in a rural area, or even a mansion in the city of Youngstown!

Ok, V&M Star is on 422 near Girard. I see Tod cemetary, and Tod field on the map. They make seamless pipe. I first read 135k as a yearly salary, but I think you mean 135k for a house price. As a salary that would get you anything you want around here. As a house price that will eliminate Canfield, Poland, and South Range school districts. Ellsworth (Western Reserve), North Jackson, and Lordstown would be good choices. They are all convenient to the highway. North of there in Trumbull County would be Brookefield, and Howland. I don't know much about Trumbull County, so I'll stick with the other towns. I've said in other threads that all of our schools are good around here. Some are just a little better than others. Youngstown city schools would be the ones to stay away from. As much as people hate to admit it, Austintown, and Boardman are turning into city schools.

I see that you are also looking at other States. This area is mostly flat with a few rolling hills that are more valleys than they are hills. We have hardwood forests and pine trees everywhere. Just about everybody with land has a pond on their property. We also have large reservoirs for boating and fishing. Our roads are laid out in large flat grids. Every 5 miles there is a major intersection. Those are the different town centers. As an Example, on 224 going East to West you will find Poland, Boardman, Canfield, Ellsworth, and Berlin Center. The congested shopping area goes from Poland to Canfield. Once you are west of Canfield, it's open farm land. It also happens to be where the rich business owners live, but they try to keep it a secret.

If you have highspeed, use Google Earth to check out our area. The images of Mahoning County are very clear. Use these zip codes 44451, 44406, and 44416 I'm still leaning towards Western Reserve schools Ellsworth Township.

Thanks for the info...its very helpful! Unfortunately, $135k is our house price, not salary. I wish! It would make things a lot easier. But the info is helpful.

Being that your employment will be very close to Trumbull Co. i would suggest Howland and Champion if you want the very best schools. Both districts are rated Excellent. I would also suggest Bazetta and Cortland, but most of the real estate in Cortland is at the very top of your price range. You might also want to look at Vienna, Liberty and perhaps Niles and Girard............although, i'm not a big fan of either of those towns, depends on what you are looking for. Most homes in Niles and Girard are very close together and most were build before 1960, actually, a lot were build before 1940!
