After the water crisis in Toledo exposed one of this administration's many horrible policies on environmental protection, what do you think Kasich's slogan should be? I was thinking something like "Jobs first, environment and human rights last", or "Ohio: we don't let the environment stand in the way of job creation".

I'm still waiting for the verdict on the root cause.

But if I'm reading the headlines correctly, this catastrophe was caused almost entirely by farm runoff from all of the pesticides used on grain crops, farm waste from industrial livestock farming, etc. If that's the case, then it's a federal issue, and Kasich et. al. can't really be blamed unless JObsOhio landed some large Ag companies in northwest Ohio recently.

What's needed IMO is a second Clean Water Act. One which specifically addresses pollution from industrial farming. Democrats need to get this moving now so they can emphasize their "action" on the issue come 2016.

... b-b-b-but that would require raising the voice of reason in the Ohio general forum.

You are right, but good luck seeing that in your lifetime. Farmers and ranchers always consider themselves "one with the land."

Northern CA is becoming an environmental wasteland due to marijuana growers diversion of streams.

If I have any choice in the matter, I buy from small, local organic grocery stores that monitor their suppliers.

People consider cheaper food prices a right so whatever is done to drive the price down is fine with them.

If the people picking the crops in the fields had what we consider basic employment rights, prices would be much higher.
If farmers and ranchers were required to take care of streams and water tables, that would also raise the price.

Umm, don't you actually have to 'create' some jobs before you would be able to use either of those?

"Any jobs created in the past four years are in spite of what DC does, not because of what DC does."

Or...

"Lake Erie was largely a dead zone in 2011 with its largest algae bloom to date, & I bent over backwards to make sure we did nothing about it."

Or...

"Added 2,000 fracking jobs for Ohioans and killed 25,000 govt jobs....isn't that a net gain?"

hahahahaha

I'm a liberal environmentalist myself, but in order to not sound like a crazy man it is imperative that the real root issue is found out before doing mindless attacking.

Like in this case, I can almost guarantee Kasich's policies did not cause or exacerbate the Toledo water catastrophe. So jumping to conclusions just makes us look stupid.

And you are right - people consider cheap food to be a right. Food isn't cheap. Especially the amount of processing it takes to make food and the logistical costs to deliver it. But we treat food like it's nearly free - thank farm subsidies and McDonald's et. al. for that logic.

It's great that food is cheap, because it helps the poverty problem, but we've reached a point where the poorest eat the cheapest types of food, which more often than not are heavily processed, loaded with fats, salts, unnatural ingredients, and often are GMO's. It's time to take a step back and re-evaluate what the food we ingest really looks like, what it contains, and where it comes from. But that's another issue for another thread.....

A good point was brought up in the earlier comments about yard pesticides. People who use those should be responsible for their share of the damage along with the farmers. I still don't understand the mentality behind using those when it's just as easy to mow what's already growing and not endanger yourselves or your children with all of the pesticides you choose to coat all over your yard. Don't understand why a "green" yard is worth the toxins. If this nation was really progressing towards being more environmentally friendly, those pesticides would have a very hefty tax tied to them that would pay for natural disaster cleanup (like the Toledo catastrophe) and wetland restoration to prevent issues like this from happening again.
