The college playoff committee selected Oklahoma over Ohio State, penalizing the Buckeyes' for the worst loss, while ignoring the Buckeyes' fourth best strength of record.

Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson, Alabama make playoff

At any rate, Ohio State was unable to overcome the bad loss at Purdue, arguably the result of poor coaching as discussed earlier in this thread.

82-9 ... I wouldn't call them doomed. We're spoiled to be sure.
Appreciate what Urban has done as coach, although I didn't approve of his handling of the Smith situation at all. Hope they send him out with a win in Pasadena.

Lotta distractions this season. Of course, it started with Urban's Zach Smith-based, 3-game suspension, where many felt Urban should have been fired. Then there were the was the (thankfully) non-fatal growths in his brain. On the field, of course, he lost linchpin defensive end Nick Bosa in the TCU game, just 3 games in; when OSU was on a roll; the Bosa loss threw the D and the team way off balance to which they finally, somewhat recovered, during the Michigan game... All these factors conspired to upset the apple cart imho...

But I'm not sad, I'm celebrating. By some standards, say Nick Saban's, Urban tenure in Columbus has been short. But in that time, Urban not only won a national championship (using 3 quarterbacks, at that!) and had OSU consistently on the doorstep of the playoffs, whose system was implemented since Meyer was hired. OSU has had 2 national championships since 2000... Traditional B1G foe/powers Michigan and Penn State have had zippo in the 21st Century. And after the up & down turmoil of the current season, QB Dwayne Haskins put the wheels back on his season to the extent he'll be in New York, Saturday, for a possible Heisman win...

Though some may say Urban has been dirty, esp considering some of his exploits at Florida, he's had a highly successful career, and his OSU tenure has been his pinnacle which has benefited OSU fans, alums and non-alums (I'm the latter) alike. Now Urban needs to step away from the game and focus on what's really important in life: family.

Side note: I don't put a ton of stock in those US News ratings, which are largely influenced by admissions statistics which: a) are largely a popularity contest and, b) have been know to be manipulated by certain schools (Washington University and Northeastern, more recently) to climb the US News ladder. The better rating is a compilation of all rating tools, including international ratings, which lean more on schools' research prowess -- and, after all, US News is rating research universities in this category as opposed to LACs which are rated separately.

Default Urban Meyer retires

As referenced in the prior two posts, Urban Meyer today announced his retirement as Ohio State's head football coach, effective Jan. 2 after the Rose Bowl game. Ryan Day will be the new head football coach.

Who is new Ohio State coach Ryan Day?

Default Ryan Day

At the end of this story, it's claimed that Day is a top-notch recruiter.

A rarity at Ohio State -- Day doesn't have even an entire season of head coaching experience.

Wishing Ryan Day all the best but cannot help but think he was in the right place at the right time. He did an excellent job as interim HC. He will be hard pressed to keep up the stellar recruiting. High school kids chose Urban as much or more than Ohio State because he put so many players into the NFL.

The Purdue loss was unfortunate but all teams lay an egg once in a while. Even the Patriots, even Alabama, remember when Michigan lost to Appalachian State. I think it’s a huge stretch to blame that day on who was hired as an assistant coach. All phases of the game were off kilter that day. We all have days like that when we cannot do anything right.

It is time to celebrate the Urban era, he was terrific. He will be greatly missed.

Default Arachnoid brain cyst.

See post 7 in this thread.

//www.city-data.com/forum/colle...l#post53805240

Meyer had brain surgery for this cyst in 2014. I suspect the treatments referred to at the end of this article already have been tried and there are no other solutions available at this time.

Default Recruiting decommitments

It's possible that both these players may eventually recommit to Ohio State, but obviously now there are reservations.

https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-...ers-retirement

Max Wray's decision concerns me the most because his brother already is an offensive lineman at Ohio State. This may suggest some dissatisfaction with the quality of the offensive line coaching at Ohio State and/or the emphasis on passing likely under the Ryan Day regime. Of course, pass blocking is a key requirement of NFL offensive linemen and the development and demonstration of these skills may make Ohio State more attractive as an emphasis is placed on a pro style offense compared to a read option, spread offense with a heavy emphasis on quarterback rushing.

Wray's decision also may be influenced by the commitment of Doug Nester, a scholastic rival, to Ohio State's 2019 football class.
