One of the college football coaching greats of all time hands over his program with great enthusiasm to a coach who has never been a head coach for an entire season, and everybody is confident that the greatness will continue unimpeded. Is everybody delusional, or not?

He was recruited by Chip Kelly, he played for Chip Kelly, coached for Chip Kelly in college, coached for Chip Kelly in the NFL, he was a graduate assistant for Urban at Florida, his father in law was a 33-year college basketball coach and Vrabel wanted him as OC.

Remember, when they hired Tressel a lot of people were saying they should take a look at Urban Meyer. Urban had the "it" factor, that certain charisma and ability that people know will lead to greatness.

Sounds to me like Ryan Day might also have that same "it" factor that they were willing to take a shot at it. If he doesn't pan out, they can always go back to Fickell.

I thought they were grooming Fickell to take over, at least under Tressel. Looks like they think Ryan Day is better.

I'm still partial to Ohio guys.

They have a pretty good band at Clemson, too, and they'll never forget Meyer.

Default Explaining the Ryan Day hiring

Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith explains why hiring Ryan Day as Ohio State's head football coach was easy -- one important factor is that he didn't want to experience a conflict given Smith's desire to keep key elements of the Ohio State coaching regime intact.

They would also probably get that with Fickell. I think they like Fickell, but they see they have the potential to have something special on offense with Day.

Plus, Fickell has only been at UC for two years. They might not have wanted to pull the rug out from under them so quickly. That was the reason Paul Chryst didn't get the job at Wisconsin the first time around. They didn't think it was fair to Pittsburgh to take their coach after only two years.

Default Urban the man, over the years

A heartfelt tribute to Urban Meyer written by a journalist, now the outdoors editor of the Toledo Blade, who has known Meyer from the start of his head coaching career at Bowling Green.

Default Urban Meyer's new role as assistant AD

It will be interesting how Meyer and new head coach Ryan Day interact in coming months and years. Hopefully, it will be a respectful and mutually beneficial relationship, as it certainly has appeared to be up to this point.

Woody Hayes had an office in the ROTC building across from Ohio Stadium after he was dismissed as head coach.

Urban Meyers' new digs described in the above-linked article are a major upgrade over Woody's post-coaching office.

I don't expect Urban to meddle in X's and O's or recruiting. He probably will be more openly bothered than Gene Smith is by losses, simply because of the standard he set. Even so, I don't expect Urban will be more bothered by losses than the Ohio State fanbase is, since there are people among them who get angry about bad wins and go ballistic about losses to better teams.

Ryan Day should have nothing to worry about. He should be glad that Urban will have other duties that distract him in his new role.
