Day appears to have done an excellent job in holding together Ohio State's 2019 football recruiting class. Ohio State likely will have a small class, due to scholarship limitations, but very high quality class.

Day and defensive line coach Larry Johnson managed to keep defensive end Zach Harrison, the fourth-ranked player in the country, at home in Ohio. Harrison seriously was considering, heaven forbid, Michigan.

Two (Desmond Howard, Charles Woodson) of Michigan's three Heisman Trophy winners were recruited from Ohio.

Day's reputation as a QB coach also has made Ohio State a favorite to land Georgia QB transfer Justin Fields, one of the highest-ranked players in the 2018 football recruiting class.

ESPN says that Justin Fields, the number 2 ranked prospect in the 2018 recruiting class, definitely is interested in transferring to Ohio State.

The above article makes it clear this is not a certainty.

Why would Ohio State want another teams back-up? Is that consistent with the proud Buckeye tradition I've heard so much about? Nothing like this was speculated when I lived in Columbus. Back then, we went after top line QB's not back-ups.

<<Justin Fields, the Georgia transfer and 5-star recruit from the Class of 2018 who is being pursued by Day and the Buckeyes, has an arm, plus running ability and size. As the former No. 2 overall player in his class, Fields fits Day’s quest for the extraordinary.>>

Fields, if he matriculates at Ohio State, would be one of the highest-ranked high school prospects to ever play for Ohio State.

Ryan Day is one of the top QB coaches in football. This would be a match made in heaven, both for Fields and Day, and certainly for Buckeye football fans. Those who joyfully remember Woody Hayes' power football epitomized by his "three yards and a cloud of dust" philosophy may be saddened, but Ohio State under Day likely will become a magnet for the nation's top recruits who want to play in a 21st century, NFL-oriented system, and this goal would be greatly aided by Fields' transfer to Ohio State.

Certainly, Dwayne Haskins' development under Day has attracted Fields to Ohio State.

Sports Illustrated puts a stamp of approval on Ryan Day's Class of 2019 recruiting success.

https://www.si.com/college-football/...al-signing-day

If Fields does transfer to Ohio State, largely because of Day's presence, this recruiting year will have been one of the best head coach transition year recruiting successes in NCAA history, as Day will have added four 5-star players to the Buckeyes roster.

Default Who is Justin Fields

<<As a high school prospect in the 2018 recruiting cycle, Fields ranked as the No. 2 overall player with a franchise rating of 101 from 247Sports. No prospect in the 2019 cycle has a rating above 98 with the highest-ranked quarterback holding a grade of 95....

At the 2017 Opening Finals in Portland, Fields put on the best passing display anybody's ever seen at the event. Over the course of the weekend, according to 247Sports data, Fields had 71.7 percent completion rate, threw 16 touchdowns and had no interceptions – all camp bests. Those 16 touchdown passes came on only 23 offensive drives.

Fields tested as one of the better athletes in the 2018 cycle, regardless of position. Checking in at 6-foot-3, 221 pounds, he posted a 4.51 second 40-yard dash and 4.16 second short shuttle in at The Opening’s Orlando regional. To put the speed in perspective, Fields’ ran a better 40 and shuttle than of 2019’s top-ranked running back Trey Sanders, despite being 3 inches taller and 7 pounds heavier than the five-star runner. That rare athleticism crosses over to the field, with Fields ripping off long touchdown runs with regularity.

I suspect that Fields' threat to transfer may result in Georgia's coaching staff stepping up efforts to placate him and keep him on the Bulldogs' roster. However, Fields truly may not like the racial atmosphere at the Univ. of Georgia, especially if it affords him an opportunity to play for Day, who has developed the reputation of being a top-notch QB whisperer. The following incident is allegedly being used by Fields to petition the NCAA for immediate eligibility if he does transfer.

Don't count on Justin Fields leaving Georgia. It's likely, however, that at the latest he'll have a conversation with Ryan Day once Dwayne Haskins announces whether or not he's leaving for the NFL.

QB Justin Fields exploring transfer but could still return to Georgia

If Haskins decides to play one more year at Ohio State, perhaps in pursuit of a Heisman, a national championship, more records, and first-team All-American honors, then Fields might consider Oklahoma or another pass-oriented Power Conference team offering him the opportunity of more playing time.

Default Justin Fields reportedly chooses Ohio State

This article says Fields will arrive at Ohio State today, and enroll on Monday. He will become the highest-ranked recruit in Ohio State history.

He must know that Haskins is leaving. There would be little point to transerring into Ohio State with a Heisman finalist as the incumbent starter.
