No kids (schools, etc of no concern)
Work from home
Want to be rural, but within reasonable drive to city

Taking into consideration: weather, crime, natural beauty, outdoor recreation, quality of life, etc

Where would you go (in ohio)?

I don't think you can go wrong in much of Ohio.

If I wanted a rural area, I'd probably look for an old farmhouse between Canton and Millersburg; someplace like this: https://www.google.com/maps/@40.6535...7i13312!8i6656

But, I'm partial, because I grew up in this area.

McArthur, in the middle of nowhere in Vinton county, about 1600 people and near the Zaleski state forest and Hocking Hills.

If I had to stay in Ohio when I retire that is where I would go but I am going to a town in Maine even smaller and more isolated.

A small town or rural area reasonably close enough to either Cleveland or Akron or Toledo or Dayton or Columbus or Cincinatti. That is, you want to be near major centers for hospitals & other healthcare facilities of the best type + concentrations of useful shopping/retail and services of varied types.

Put-in-Bay?

My main requirements excluding jobs, cost, and schools:
  • Single family home with a decent sized yard
  • Walkable/Bikeable; low reliance on cars
  • Nature and the outdoors
  • Urban amenities
  • Civic pride & sense of community
  • Interesting architecture

The first two bullets are hard to reconcile.

I really think my answer might be Put-in-Bay. It's just a question if if I could handle the ferry trips to leave the island and the isolation during winter. The constant stream of tourists might be tiring at times too.
