Mea culpa. Washington State wasn't ranked (nor was Washington), so likely Wisconsin will fall from the rankings as it was only ranked 18 entering the game.

Default Feel-good moment in Buckeyes' Toledo victory

TC Caffey, a true freshman walk-on from Hubbard, Ohio, scored on an amazing 49-yard TD run in the 4th quarter. Even though the run likely occurred against Toledo reserves, it indicates the recruiting riches afforded Ohio State, when a Div. III first team All-Ohio player elects to attend Ohio State without a scholarship.

Next week, Wisconsin visits Ohio Stadium in the first major conference test for the 2022 Buckeyes. Will injuries in the running back room provide Caffey with more carries against the Badgers, and perhaps a scholarship in the future?

Default Knowles the Communicator; linebackers anchor the Silver Bullets resurrection

Jim Knowles defensive magic formula appears to be working, even though still in its formative stage. Of course, the real tests lie ahead against Penn State and the school up north.

These articles were informative and encouraging, especially after watching Steele Chambers repeatedly seal the edge against Rutgers.

<<
Vincent is one of the seasoned veterans on the team, so he’s seen coaches and players come and go over his time with the Buckeyes.

However, new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles already stands above the rest despite his recent arrival due to his communication and willingness to teach his players.

“You can talk to him,” Vincent said. “If you have questions about the defense – what we’re doing, how we’re doing it, why we’re doing it – he has all the answers for you....”

Vincent was not only complimentary of Knowles’ openness to questions from players, but also the defensive scheme itself, saying the use of linebackers like Tommy Eichenberg and Steele Chambers allows him to play with assurance up front.>>

https://www.si.com/college/ohiostate...e-coordinators

<<

Together, Chambers and Eichenberg led the way for another dominant defensive effort for Ohio State on Saturday as the Buckeyes limited Rutgers to only 3.3 yards per play. And that’s what they’ve been doing all year.

Eichenberg leads the Buckeyes with 42 total tackles this season (already nearly two-thirds of the 64 total tackles he had in 13 games last season) and 5.5 tackles for loss (only 1.5 fewer than he had in 2021). Chambers now has 30 total tackles in 2022 (only 17 fewer than he had in 13 games last season) and four tackles for loss (one fewer than he had in all of 2021).>>

"Offense on defense:"

<<

Chambers said Saturday’s game was one of the best games he’s had as a Buckeye and believes Knowles’ defensive scheme has enabled him to play at his best this year.

“His whole thing is that we're playing offense on defense,” Chambers said. “So we're just being really aggressive, and I feel like that's something I thrive at.”>>

Default Hartline is nation's best NCAA football positions coach

Joel Klatt, Fox Sports' lead college football game analyst, says Buckeyes wide receiver coach and passing game coordinator Brian Hartline is the nation's best NCAA football positions coach.

Klatt, a former record-setting University of Colorado quarterback, explains why he believes Hartline is so extraordinary in the podcast segment linked in this article.

https://www.elevenwarriors.com/skull...in-america-and

Klatt points out through the first six games of this season, Egbuka and Harrison are posting better numbers than Olave and Wilson through six games last season.

Not only is Hartline a great recruiter, Hartline also is an "unbelievable teacher of the game, and more specifically, the [receiving] craft," Klatt says in the podcast.

Default Ryan Day now faces the fate of John Cooper, as a coach who can't beat Michigan

Ryan Day not only apparently miscalculated in his defensive hires, his play-calling also now is under heavy criticism.

<<Day seems to tighten up in the biggest moments. His play-calling becomes erratic and predictable when he needs to open the throttle. If Urban became addicted to the RPO, Day seems stubbornly focused on running bubble screens that rarely seem to work. He wastes valuable downs and consistently shows little faith in his team by not going for it on gettable 4th downs....

The second part of letter No. 2 needs to be reserved for strength and conditioning coach, Mickey Marrotti. Coach Mick has been a valued and trusted part of the OSU program, but after two years of this team being pushed around, it is time for a change. OSU has consistently been out-muscled and ran out of gas at the exact times Day has needed them to step up most. The strength and conditioning coach is an integral part of the program. They work with the team all offseason and are as critical as the offensive, or defensive coordinators in making sure the team is ready to compete - physically and mentally.

So if Day has built a Ferrari, he needs a new driver to hand the play calling to and he needs a new pit crew chief to get his supercar ready for the track....

It is fair to say that nobody in the country has done less with more over the last four years than Ryan Day. Back-to-back top five quarterbacks in the NFL Draft, the best receiving corps in CFB (maybe in history), and four and five star talent peppered all over the roster. >>

While Ohio State likely will have a chance to redeem itself against Georgia in the play-offs, the probable outcome is another decisive defeat, with Ohio State's administration pondering how to salvage its shattered football program.

Of course, a national championship including victories over Georgia and Michigan, would warrant forgiveness for the two, most recent lopsided losses to Michigan.

Default Ohio State faces toughest secondary of year in Peach Bowl

Given Ohio State's lackluster passing attack against both Maryland and Michigan, facing the vaunted Georgia secondary in the Peach Bowl doesn't bode well unless Ryan Day dials up some offensive coaching acumen not evident in the Michigan game.

<<Georgia, though, expects a well-stocked secondary for this playoff semifinal in its back yard. Safety Christopher Smith was a first-team All-SEC selection, and cornerback Kelee Ringo made second team. Cornerbacks Javon Bullard and Kamari Lassiter and safety Malaki Starks also have strong Pro Football Focus grades.

Georgia’s schedule included high-scoring offenses Oregon, Tennessee, Mississippi State and LSU. Still, It’s defense ranks 11th in opposing quarterback efficiency rating, 13th in yards allowed per attempt and eighth in fewest touchdown passes allowed.>>

Default "Explosives" expose Buckeye defense coordinator Jim Knowles

When Ryan Day hired Jim Knowles as his defensive coordinator, it appears that he didn't appreciate the vulnerability of Knowles' defensive scheme to big plays of 20 yards or more. Ohio State made no adjustments to the scheme even after both Penn State and Maryland scored 30 or more points against the Buckeyes. Consequently, Michigan exploited this vulnerability in the second half of its rout of Ohio State.

<<The Ohio State defense gave up 35 plays of 20 or more yards to opposing offenses in the first 11 games of the season. Only seven of those went for touchdowns.

Then Michigan gashed the Buckeyes on six different plays of 20-plus yards on Nov. 26. The Wolverines got in the end zone on five of them, and each score was well over 20 yards.....

Ohio State hadn’t allowed more than five explosive plays in any game until it took on Penn State, which had seven 20-yard pickups and finished with 31 points against the Buckeyes – 10 more than any other opponent had managed to that point. The Buckeyes also gave up seven such plays to Maryland three weeks later and six to Michigan after that.

As a result, each team put up 30 or more points on the Buckeyes. They were the three top offenses Ohio State faced all regular season. Michigan ranks 27th in average yards per game (453.5), Penn State ranks 35th (432.4) and Maryland is slotted at No. 51 (406.1).>>

https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-...need-to-adjust

Unfortunately, the no. 1 ranked Georgia team that the Buckeyes will face in the Peach Bowl has the best offense that Ohio State will face this season.

<<The Buckeyes’ next opponent, defending national champion Georgia, averages nearly 40 more yards of offense than any of those teams. The Bulldogs’ 491.9 yards per game are seventh-best in the nation, and their 39.2 points per game are second only to Michigan in terms of Ohio State adversaries. Georgia is fresh off an SEC Championship Game performance in which it put up 50 points on then the No. 14 team in the country, and the Bulldogs had 35 points before halftime.>>

Ohio State is now aware of this vulnerability, resulting partly due to the commitment of safeties to stopping the run, but will it be able to change its scheme successfully in order to defeat the Bulldogs? If not, the Buckeyes may be routed in the play-off semifinals.

Default Sonny Styles will bolster defense as a sophomore

Styles fashed his ability in the Peach Bowl against Georgia, despite still a freshman:

<<Styles impressed Eliano and defensive coordinator Jim Knowles with his ability to hang tough against Georgia’s elite tight ends in the CFP, which figures to bode well for his chances to play a bigger role for the Buckeyes in 2023.>>

If Ryan Day does not beat Michigan this year, he needs fired...that's the #1 job of the Ohio State Football coach...Urban Meyer was 7-0 and I'd much rather have him back if Day can't get the job done.
