Never been, and don't plan on going. I love Athens, and it's downtown area. But aside from that, I stay away from SE Ohio, too Appalachian for my liking.

Point that nose any higher in the air and the angels in heaven will bloody it.

Default Probably not the worst in U.S. but bad.

I see this is an old thread but people continue to post on it now and then.

I am from Perry Co.I left it years ago.I have lived in other states and different areas of Ohio. Thankfully I will never have to live in Perry Co again and found a very nice area to permanently settle, in my home state of OH.

There are some good, friendly people in Perry Co but the bad outweighs the good.I am from the southern area of the county. That area of the county, including New Lexington ,just driving through it looks worse now than it ever has. Most news I still hear about or read from that area is rarely positive. It's almost always miserable news.

Anyone thinking of moving to that area should reconsider.Unless, you like fist fight watching in random parking lots or back roads.Your mailbox smashed to smithereens, animal abuse and cruelty(like mutilation, etc),a drug problem that has gotten worse than ever and rampant alcoholism.

Your home broken into and invaded.Corrupt police officers, etc.Good ol' boy network, town bullies(yes, like Dutiel who also ran a horrible puppy mill AND article above in last post on this thread).Vicious rumors thrown about just because someone gets bored and this happens to most people there sooner or later no matter how well behaved.Domestic violence, dead main strips with little access to anything OR your rear kicked for coming into a local watering hole as an out of towner(unless you keep your mouth completely shut or your a cute girl) if you run into either some punks in the place or fallen former hometown football hero's who peaked in high school 10,15,20 yrs ago wantin' some action & release, whilst the whole place cheers on your beating(or to be beaten into a coma if you mouth off even if you are a townie)-then SE Perry Co Ohio is for you.

There are things I've seen and experienced from my time in that area(many years) that still ,on occasion, give me nightmares(literally)just having witnessed things. Having to even go back there for an emergency(I also still have family there that refuses to leave the area ,for fear they can't assimilate else where, a mindset common there)puts me into a depression for a week to a month after leaving to come home...hours away from it.If it was not for family I would never step foot in that area ever again.

THAT is how dysfunctional it is.It's especially a bad area to raise children in..trust me.Ohio as a whole has problems but this is one of the worst areas in the state that I know of.There are people there that want change and to better the county.
They have a fight ahead of them because most there do not want better,an improved lifestyle, or see beyond Perry Co.the way it's been for decades except little changes here and there which usually don't amount to much.

For a lot of people from the area(myself included at one time in the distant past)leaving there is some what culture shock it is so backward. It takes times to realize there is life, different attitudes, ideas, diversity, culture, new experiences and new things to learn outside that hole AND LIFE CAN BE A WHOLE LOT HAPPIER and fulfilling else where.

Keep looking if you desire a smaller community to raise children, retire in, or desire a rural setting in Ohio. There are decent places to live in a smaller setting that have more to offer than Perry Co.in Ohio.Sorry to the good people of Perry Co but if you're from the area you know there is truth in the post.

Kentucky will gladly trade you Harlan County.

But don't, because I like Ohio better.
