I'm a part-time English composition instructor, looking for a "second act," a midlife career change. I've talked to several people I know who say that I have the temperament and good skills for this work. In other words, I write well and I have a good eye for detail.

I've got some questions here that I hope some of you might be able to answer.

How long does it take to train to be a paralegal? How much does it matter where you train? Are there any programs that I should look into or that I should definitely avoid?

What is the employment outlook for paralegals? Are there jobs available, or am I just wasting my time, effort and money?

If any of you are paralegals, is there anything you wish you had known before getting into the field? If so, what do you wish you had known?

Hi YtownGuy--

The market for paralegals isn't good. I have a lot of anecdotal stories about recent law graduates taking jobs as paralegals because they can't find jobs as attorneys in firms or government, which would be putting downward pressure on paralegals. That said, if you know somebody or can get in with a firm, then it could be a viable extra gig.

Disagree. I've been in the legal field for years.
At least in the major cities, you shouldn't have a hard time finding a job.
Quick Monster.com search shows 7 jobs in CLE, 10 in COL, 6 in CIN.
Maybe not a ton, but they are there.
Keep in mind a paralegal doesn't do much writing. Research, E-discovery and organizing case info.
Any kind of certification is essential in landing a job. Your time gets billed to the client so you need to be efficient.and a good time manager.

Thank you, Peregrine. I think Cleveland will be the main focus of my search; it's closer to home and more familiar but I'm not going to turn up my nose at Columbus. Cincinnati is probably a very nice place, but farther away and less familiar for now.

In my work, I've had to do plenty of research. Giving grades to large numbers of students requires a certain level of organization and time management, so I think I should be fine.
