EB, you mentioned the "lake effect", I've only heard of that recently. When I lived in Michigan, (Cadillac)the "lake effect either hadn't been discovered or created then.
I not only lived close to Lake Michigan, but my hometown was practically and island because it has lakes on both sides and a canal that runs through town connecting both lakes.
You can see one end of the canal here.
That's Lake Cadillac in the picture

Home boy don't go on ice . look to much like cow on ice, not good. And that lake effect snow is caused be the moister that the low fronts pick-up as it passes over the open water of Lake Erie and dumps it all on us. And lots of it, too. .

They must have had another name for "lake effect" back in the 50's and 60's. Or it was broadcasted by discription and no specific name.

I know we had it. I remember walking 1/2 mi, to school on 12' snow banks.

I was fairly good at snow skiing, but I could never ice skate.

hey I'm not the least bit worried about it, if it snows it snows, I'm retired and I don't have to be out there in it if I don't want to be, besides where I come from originally I'm used to anywhere from 2 to 4 foot of snow at a time so this little bit isn't even going to be an inconvenience, anyway, I've got 4 Wheel Drive and I'm in no hurry...

I look at it this way, "If it's that bad out there, I'm staying home".

Now the weather man says that it's supposed to start here about 5 AM and we're supposed to get 3 to 6 inches, I wonder if he really knows for sure. I look at it this way, when I stick my head out the door and it's snowing then I'll know...
