On December 11, 2008 Gov. Strickland announced the budget deficits faced by Ohio were so deep, only laying off virtually all state employees and closing all programs would address the issue. Since then, only one article, in the Cincinnati Enquirer, has appeared.

Worst case: Close prisons, raise tuition | Cincinnati Enquirer | Cincinnati.Com

I live in Cleveland, and the state's prisons seem to surround the city. I am very worried about the question of prisoners being released. My understanding is that states like New York, California, Illinois, and Indiuana are almost as bad off financially and if so, I cannot imagibe the Federal Gov't maintaining order.

Has anyone any news on the matter?

The headline does say that is the "worst case" scenario. I doubt things are close to that point yet. Now would be a good time to write your state legislators, citing that article, and ask what they are doing to help Ohio avoid the worst case.

This is from last June. Strickland cuts programs using rainy day fund - OPENERS - Ohio Politics Blog by The Plain Dealer

I hate to admit it, but I'm starting to like Governor Strickland. First he supported gun owner rights, and the home owners right to self defense. Now he is acting like a fiscal conservative. I may even have to vote for him next time around.

I really like Strickland too..........seems like he's doing things as a dem that the GOP is "supposed" to do. Taft was a useless piece of crap, so i'm enjoying the improvement in leadership.

Wow, don't let the other states see the heading, "State of Ohio Closing?" as there is already a popular saying in the Carolinas: Are there any cities left in Ohio? There can't be, they all seemed to have moved down here."

I really hope that the economy is able to be repaired up there, so people can go back to work and not have to look elsewhere for jobs. That's why I moved away 25 years ago.

I rather like Gov. Strickland, especially since the Dann era is over! Yes, the governor has a tough road ahead; Ohio's economic problems are pretty large. But I honestly believe that things will get better. Maybe notr in the immediate future. But I believe in cycles. And one day, we may see Floridians moving back here in droves!

Yeah, how embarrassing that Dann is from Liberty Township (just north of Y-town) in my county! Yuck!

Strickland will never get my vote.
He stepped across the line when he barged into my personal finances.
As a single mother, and the only wage earner in my home, sometimes I need to do a payday loan. Where does he get off making it impossible for me to do so? I have a college degree, I'm not stupid. I don't want him or anyone else butting into my personal finances. What he has done is take away my ability to help myself. My credit score is going down the drain. Instead of hurting the single income families, he could have at least showed up to fight against pornography and other issues that affect Ohio families. Sorry for my 2 cents.

Well, i wouldn't totally blame Strickland for that. I, along w/many other voters in Ohio voted to reduce the inflated interest rates you pay for those loans. I don't think it's right for those businesses to take advantage of people the way that they were. If you need a $500 loan here and there and you supposedly had good credit before why not go to a bank or credit union and open a line of credit.
