Is Bellevue, OH a viable place to retire?

What issues are particular to this area? Please share your local news.

I'm originally from Tiffin, OH. Not very far away from Bellevue. My parents live in the country, close to it.

Worst thing about Bellevue: The Trains. Not only are there a lot of trains that pass through, but they always seem to go at a snail's pace. I once heard some authority (don't remember exactly who it was) say that among small towns, Bellevue is one of the worst towns in america in terms of dealing with trains.

But Bellevue is just like any other small town. Simple living, with bars and restaurants around. (although the selection is nothing like you would get closer to a big city). The hospital there was built just a few years ago (five I thnk), and provides a nice facility with very good services. There are two supermarkets to choose from, so at least you aren't always forced to buy from the same one.

That's about all I know. I'm sure theres worse places to live in Ohio.

My coworker and her family live in Bellevue. Her daughter and SIL purchased a home there to be close to mom and dad while raising their own family, they all seem to like it well enough. Slow paced, not too much going on, but close enough to better towns that it isn't a complete inconvenience. I personally have never been there, so I'm just speaking from 2nd hand knowledge.

I live just 10 minutes from Bellevue and know of the area very well. It all depends on what you are looking for in retirement. In my opinion ~ Bellevue is a dying town. There really is no "downtown" to speak of - many vacant, rundown buildings. I know the town has an awful time with semi's having to use their main street to pass through (Route 20 runs directly through Bellevue's downtown).

Again, it all depends on what exactly you are looking for in retirement. Where are you coming from? And is there a particular reason you have set your desires on this area?

I live near Bellevue and my bf grew up there and lived most of his life there. I've driven through it, but I can't see why anyone would retire there. It's pretty rundown, and old... It's not a bad place, I don't think it's dangerous, and some of the big old houses are lovely. But it seems like a lot of traffic and trains...

If I was retiring, I don't think I'd move there...

Bellevue is a city of 8,000 or so (more population lives in surrounding unincorporated areas as well) in north-central Ohio. It is unique in that the city lies in 4 counties (Erie, Huron, Sandusky, and Seneca). Bellevue is the western-most city in Ohio's Firelands and Western Reserve area......and is very close to the Sandusky/Cedar Point/Lake Erie Islands vacation region.

Very close is a relative thing....it may not be 'that far away' but really, it's over a half hour just to get into Sandusky and even longer to get to Port Clinton and the Islands.

It's always been an 'okay' place, but I have no idea why someone would want to retire there if they aren't from the area.
