Hello everyone,

I'll be graduating college in May and have been browsing open jobs (kinda tricky right now with the economy) and every so often a job I would be interested in pops up in Wooster. Can anyone give me a little insight on Wooster? I'm from Maine so I'm used to the cold and small town aspects. How would a 22 year old fit in in Wooster? Would it be easy to meet people? How is the crime in Wooster? Any help would be much appreciated! I'm seriously considering Wooster for my next step in life!

For a 22 year old, I don't know how well the fit would be. From the times I have been there it seems like it is just a slower pace environment. I mean, you have your average small town shopping and the wal mart/targets etc...but no nice shopping complexes (I don't think...but it's been a while since I've been there). And I don't think the night life for a 22 year old would be too exciting. Personally, if you are looking into Ohio, I'd check out Columbus. The city is doing much better economically than the others in our state and would offer a lot more for the life a 22 year old would want. You do say that you are used to small town life though, so maybe Wooster wouldn't bother you. But if you want a change of pace, there are several suburbs of Columbus that I think may fit the lifestyle for a fresh college graduate. What type of job will you be looking for that keeps coming up in Wooster? That may help a little bit to see what part of Ohio would suit you best.

Hope that helps a little!

Wooster mainly consists of The College of Wooster, a very politically conservative college, and a bunch of Amish people. It is safe, and it is lovely country, but is this your idea of a good time at 22?

Well, I agree. It is really small. The good news... you can get Smuckers Jelly whenever you want! ha ha. That's where their factory is. You might have to give yourself a half hour drive to Akron to get some good night life. But if you're going to be working in Wooster, why not consider moving somewhere not in Wooster where you can meet young people? One of my college professors lived in Wooster & drove to Akron every day & he didn't mind the drive. He said that he did like living there. He talked about an open market that they have one night a week... I don't think it was on the weekends, but anyway, he said all the old people would come & buy their fruits & vegies at the market. Ha ha. Try Akron. It's not bad & there's TONS of bars & LOTS of young people.

It is a small city, but there's lots of parks and there are some bars that have been opening up to attract young people (Three Amigos downtown, BW3s on the north end and probably many others). I grew up there and still go to Wooster all the time. It is a lot of old people and conservatives, but there are a lot of liberal, open-minded people in Wooster too (hello, small liberal arts college right smack dab in the center of town). There's all kinds of stuff to do within a half hour or so of Wooster as well. But it's definitely a safe, quiet place to be and the cost of living is super reasonable there.

Honestly I would say don't do it. It is way to boring. The teens find going to walmart as an activity. There is no clubs, few jobs, and property taxes keep raising for the Wooster city schools. Ohio is quite the boring area. Amish are everywhere, and we have to claim the indians and browns. Wooster's fair is probably the best fair in Ohio except for the Ohio state fair. If you really have your heart set on Ohio, I would suggest Columbus, the economy is better, a great night life, and loads of college kids. Can't forget the buckeyes either!

I am in Ohio now and counting the minutes until I can go back to Maine permanently. I know how things are in Maine, not the easiest place in the country to find a job, but I think it's a shame so many younger people have to leave to find work.

Cleveland has a good night life, Cincinnati has a good night life. The Benglas are good, and last I checked the Cavs had the best record in the NBA. There are Amish in a small portion of the NE part of the state.

If you think Ohio is boring, then hell, I don't know what to say about Maine. They don't even have anything remotely close to what Ohio has to offer.

Last time I was in Maine they didn't have near the urban sprawl, gridlock, litter, crime, and urban decay we enjoy here in Ohio. It can get really monotonous to live on a coastline and watch whales swim by and bald eagles flying through the sky and driving through miles of unspoiled wilderness where gated golf course communities should be.

There is a saying among exiled Maineiacs, "You gotta go where it sucks to make the bucks"

In my post I said though, they don't have what Ohio offers. Ohio has over 10 million more people than Maine. We have three metro areas with more people than Maine. I expect us to have more traffic, gridlock, and general urban issues you find anywhere in the country with large urban areas. I agree, Maine is beautiful, but as far as things to do, and as you say, money to make, Ohio offers so much more.
