I have heard that New Albany is a small city of about 6,000 and it still has that small town feel to it out in the country but, not far from the city. I have also heard that Lancaster is a bigger city out in the countryside but not far from the city also. Does anyone know how far these places are from the city? Does anyone know how safe these areas are. How well is the commute?

My urban planning firm has givin me the oppurtunity to move to SE Ohio and i only have a month to respond. I already have a job ready for me down there but, i need to know the best places to live.

New Albany for sure. Lancaster is nice, but New Albany is, well, rich. The place has more money than they know what to do with. Also, NA has a lower crime rate than Lancaster. Not that Lancaster has a high one, but NA is very safe and has a great atmosphere. Just my opinion though. If I could afford to live in NA I would.

Thank you. Im still in the process of thinking about where to move to. I know Columbus has some really great suburbs its a really hard decision. Hilliard, New Albany, Dublin, Deleware, Worthington. Lots of choices.

My screenname will immediately reveal my prejudice here (haha!) but even from several objective standards, I'd pick Lancaster over NA hands down. Here's why...

New Albany has an exceedingly high per capita income--and is full of obnoxious, cliquey yuppies. Lancaster is much more economically diverse--with factory workers, teachers, mechanics, doctors, lawyers, common laborers and even some wealthy farmers who could buy half of New Albany (if they wanted to, no thanks) all calling Lancaster home.

Then there's the housing. In NA, developers have built a bunch of really expensive houses since 1990 that all look basically the same (McMansions) creating artifically "historic" appearances for the housing stock 'cuz they're all in a Georgian-revival style. Lancaster has the real thing--a startlingly large collection of vintage homes in and around town, which were actually built in the 1830s-70s and display the solid quality construction to prove it.

Distance wise, Lancaster is ~30 miles from DT Columbus, while New Albany's maybe ~15 miles away. But given the insane traffic gridlock on the NE side (think Easton, the aiport, 161/270 construction) either commute will take about the same amount of time.

Just my 2¢...

I can't think of 2 more different areas.

New Albany is yuppie suburbia. Strip malls and Bed Bath and Beyond stuff.

Lancaster is a countrified town that, due to Columbus' growth, has seen a small boom from people that want a 45-50 minute commute to downtown Columbus (including parking).

It's really up to whatever floats your boat.

I would look at Pickerington if you are aiming for that side of town. It has the best of both worlds.
