With summer coming fast I was wondering if anyone else misses some of the older parks...ie. Geauga Lake, Sea World or Idora Park? Anyone have interesting stories or pictures from these gems? I know there is still a waterpark where Geauga Lake was but its just not the same without the Big Dipper, Blue Streak or Double Loop. I think the Wildcat was the old Idora ride. I always liked the ability to bring in your own food and just enjoy the park's atmosphere. The last time at Geauga Lake (it was 6 Flags at that point)my wife got sick on the first rollercoaster and didn't ride much more the rest of the day (turns out she was pregnant with my son)!

I loved the Big Dipper at Geauga Lake! Used to ride it over and over. Does anyone know what happened to their coasters? I thought I read somewhere that they would be relocated at Cedar Point, but far as I know, that never happened.

Here is a recent article describing the current fate of the Big Dipper.

Wow! Okay, I'm buying it...

When I was a kid I thought Sea World was lame. Looking back, I am impressed that NE Ohio even had such a place. I remember taking field trips there in elementary school. Also used to go with my grandparents who wouldn't take me to Geauga Lake because they didn't do rides!

Totally agree Strudel. I thought Sea World was lame, too, growing up. Never realized how lucky we were to have such a place here. Now I miss it.

Were amusement parks common in "the old days," or was NE Ohio just special? Not only did Youngstown have Idora Park, but Canton had Meyer's Lake Park. (I'm too young to remember it though)

Seems like they were quite common once upon a time. There was one here in MT that is remembered fondly (local PBS did a documentary on it), and as I was just cruising the Internet I found that there were several in Idaho and Washington that have long been defunct. Strange, huh?

I haven't been to an amusement park in eons. Closest I've come is the occasional sojourn back to OH for the Canfield Fair! Need to do that again this year. Maybe fit in a Cedar Point trip while I'm at it.

When I was in high school, our after prom was held at Geauga Lake. It was cool. From that night until about sunrise, just a few schools had the park to themselves.
