That sounds like a personal choice. People in The Woodlands, TX do that as well.

When was the last time you were at the fairgrounds? There are a lot of improvements happening there. Many of those hideous looking exhibit halls are gone.
Sitting in a glorified high school football stadium sounds pretty bad too.

I will give you it's been at least ten years since i have been to the fairground. The last time I was in the arena, which did have to be 20 years ago, it still had a dirt floor. No kidding. Dirt.

Is it still surrounded by used tire places and salvage yards?

I think it's probably as attractive as Jenks.

No, it isn't. In which arena were you? If it is the 10,000 seat State Fair Arena, the floor is interchangeable. Always has been. The former Oklahoma City Blazers played ice hockey there when the Myriad was booked (before the Peake was built), and it is still the home of the state high school basketball. If it is one of the annex arenas, those were built for the sole purpose of equestrian events and livestock exhibits.

That being said, the annex arenas are gone, replaced with new exhibit arenas, some for livestock and some for general exhibits.

You need to give OKC another chance; a lot has changed in 20 years. People in OKC don't have the hatred for Tulsa that so many up the turnpike like yourself have for OKC. The entire state would be better off if the pissing contest would be put to rest. OKC has great July 4th events and Tulsa has great July 4th events; that's final.

The OKC/Tulsa rivalry only enables rural Oklahoma to run the show at 23rd and Lincoln which hurts both metro areas.

I understand the livestock halls. This was State Fair Arena. I went to a state small school playoff basketball game there. The wood floor for the game was sitting on dirt, seriously. The basketball court didn't fill the floor so the areas around were exposed dirt. You had to walk on the dirt to get into the stands. Looked very unsafe. This would have been late 80's or early 90's. I assume that it was done for Rodeo, but still.

I was used the big school games being played at the Mabee Center when I was in high school in the mid 80's, the difference was shocking.

The last time I went to the "Oklahoma State Fair" was 10-15 years ago. Not that I like fairs much, but it was particularly bad. We parked in a mud choked field because the parking lots weren't even paved. The monorail was rusted and not working. Some of the event halls were only somewhat airconditioned tents. The area around the fairgrounds looked like North Tulsa with the scrap yards and used tire places. Even at the time it was pitiful compare to the Tulsa fair. And that was before Expo Square was completely redone.

OKC was at its worst in the late 80s/early 90s. It's ridiculous to make assumptions about OKC today based on how it was back then.

So you are judging OKC by what you saw 15 years ago? I'm sure if someone was in the Tulsa forum saying what an awful place Tulsa was in 1998, you would probably be all over them.

And I frankly don't understand why you are even posting on this thread. Someone asks for something to do in OKC over the 4th weekend so they can get out of their in laws house just for a little bit and you suggest something an hour and a half away? Makes no sense. I think you are just trolling at this point.

The OP did kind of mention that they have been to OKC several times, and it was kind of like 'been there and done that'. So I was wondering, what would OKC folks suggest that's kind of on the outskirts? Someone mentioned Pop's, I have been there several times and find that place very interesting. I have never seen anyplace quite like it, and plus it's on historic RT-66. And it would be real easy to do Guthrie in the same day.

Firelake Grand Casino, Pops, Lake Thunderbird, the museums in Norman, Riverwind Casino, the fireworks retail stands on the border of Oklahoma County (purchase with the intention of deploying said fireworks in a neighboring county, hence don't drive back into Oklahoma County after you load up your vehicle), the Scottish Rite temple in Guthrie, the indoor water park in Clinton (for those who don't want to go to White Water Bay), Wild West waterworks at Frontier City.
