I'm helping my brother out here...he is supposed to be receiving a job offer in the next couple days for a position in OKC. He will be looking for a rental, preferably a house.

Here's the info I have:

The job location is near N. Lincoln/NE 50th (so, near I-44/I-235)

He will be renting because the job is only expected to be in that office for 2-3yrs.

He will likely need a house as he has 2 good size dogs (well behaved boxers).

So he would like a 2 bedroom house with a fenced yard.

No kids so schools don't matter.

He would like no more than a 20-30 minute commute.

In his words, he doesn't care much about condition (ie. upgraded) because he needs inexpensive to get some financials in order. "In the country" is ok too if there is anything that stays within the desired commute.

However, needs to be "safe" as he has a wife who will be home with the dogs (due to medical issues, she is unable to work).

He would love under $900 if possible. He could possibly go up a little but as mentioned, wants to get some financials in order so really wants under $900 if he can.

Given that price range are there any areas you would recommend checking for rental houses?

Thanks.

That doesn't seem like a very safe area of OKC to rent. I haven't been down there in a while so things might have changed. You might as well look into the downtown area and commute.

I think Edmond would be perfect for him and a short commute. Moore would be a good fit except for the commute of 45 minutes.

Texas, there are some nice rural/suburban homes north of I44 around the I35 junction. You might find one for rent in that area. It would be close to the Interstate, close to the city, but away from all the traffic. Nice and quiet.

Well, the offer letter is only about 5 months later than expected...but has happened and my brother is likely to accept.

Any additional suggestions or information? The original post information is still accurate as for what they will be looking for.

He was wondering about Guthrie? What sort of commute might that be?

Guthrie would probably be a 35 or so minute commute. I don't see why anybody would want to commute that far unless there is something specific about Guthrie they like. You can find a safe, suburban community closer to the city than that.

Well, his thinking is financial...that a rental in Guthrie would be less expensive. He is getting a raise but they want to buckle down and get some financials in order. So they want something less expensive than they can actually afford. But they need at least a 2br house with a fenced yard that will accept 2 dogs. That said, I agree with you...no reason to live that far out unless you really want to.

The small town of Jones OK might be worth a look. It is probably 20 minutes from work (NE) and might have cheaper rents. Just a thought.

Jones is what came to my mind. I know nothing about it, but it would be handy. I don't know if Choctaw would also be a place to look. My son works out of an office in the same vicinity of 50th and Lincoln and he lives way across in the NW part of OKC, on past Meridian.
