I was a lot more religious before moving to Oklahoma, but Christianity here basically means being nasty to others who don't believe like you do, hating LGBT people, denying science, and keeping blind, total allegiance to the Republican Party. Don't vote Republican? Well, you are going to hell. Oklahoma evangelicalism has me very disillusioned with Christianity as a whole, at least in its predominant form here.

Your assertion about Oklahoma's allegiance to the Republican Party is ridiculous nonsense. I grew up in Southern Oklahoma, otherwise known as Little Dixie. In later years my husband and I and our two children moved to Northern Oklahoma. The first day we drove around the square and my son said, "these Republicans look just like we do." He was an astute observer, but in some parts of Oklahoma being a Republican is an oddity. I doubt you ever heard anyone say if you don't vote Republican, you're going to hell. I doubt if anyone even thought such a thing. You talk as if you know all about this state, when you only know a smattering.

I played bridge in Oklahoma City with a Mormon who had been a missionary and decided to settle in OKC. He was very well liked. If he encountered hate, it didn't prevent his enjoying life in Oklahoma. He's the only Mormon I knew in Oklahoma, so I can only base my opinion on him. Hell, it never occurred to me to wonder about his political beliefs.

Never personally dealt with racism while living in other major cities !! Until I moved to Oklahoma.

I lived in OKC metro for 10+years.While working at Bob Moore Cadillac several years ago,I was called a wet-back and sp1c.Went to onque in Edmond and made some joke in Spanish and guy said "oh no we only speak English around here"

fshaurya: TRUST me take it from another big city guy,Don't move to Oklahoma !!,
Since you're Hindu and not a "Christian" they'll label you as a Muslim "terrorist"
There are racists everywhere, even in India: https://www.quora.com/Why-are-Indian...untry-on-earth

And if you want to experience real racism, the kind that kills, visit Chicago.

My post #82 was a comment to a post bawac made in response to my #81 post. In it he cited a couple of incidents that happened to him in Oklahoma and he described them as extreme and didn't include the whole state.

Wow. Liberal, overly "educated" S.J.W. insanity at it's peak here.

Really? I'm friends with a black girl, but I do not find her sexually attractive. Is that racist?

I'm friends with a white girl in the same social circle who I do not find sexually attractive. Is that sexist?

And there are just as many guys as there are gals in this social circle, and it turns out that I'm attracted to absolutely none of them. Does that make me a homophobe?

I wanted to give my two cents even though I haven't moved to Oklahoma just yet. My husband is there and I am following him with my son in two weeks. I grew up for 25 years in Boston, also the northeast and in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood. I am a Christian with parents who adopted one of the first interracial adoptions in 1970. So I have black siblings in my immediate family since I was an infant. Racism simply is not something I see. I just see people. Growing up in a Jewish neighborhood I also respect differences. The Big Apple is all about that which is why it is so beautiful..there is no room for prejudism.

Moving from Boston to Tampa, FL the world seemed full of "Christians" who are bible thumpers who on their 3rd divorce with a lot of judgement of their own. The crime was a shocker too. I can't tell you all I have seen in my 14 years here. But enough about that...

My attitude is if people are prejudice they lose out on getting to know so many great people in their life. That is THEIR loss. And honestly they are not worth your time. Respect people and put yourself out there. Replanting yourself takes time. It won't happen overnight. I have a toddler to boot I'm taking with me and a large dog. I am hoping to use mom groups and what not to reach out. There will be people out there worth knowing, it just will take time.

Very thoughtful post, Cora.

To the bold, I agree 110%.

African American Men do not have a Constitutional Right and Guarantee under the Unites States
of America Constitution to have Intimate Sexual Relationships with White/Asian/Chicanos Women.
The Selection Of Sexual Partners Is Not A Indicator Of Racism In The Least Bit ( howest2008). Not
Finding PEOPLE OF OTHER RACES SEXUAL COMPATIBLE WITH YOURSELF IS NOT RACISM.

I CAN''T BELIEVE THAT YOU NEVER HAD SEXUAL RELATIONS WITH someone that you
were NOT sexually attractive to , boy you missed out on some of the best sex in the world LOL....
you bring water to my eyes.......LOL.......

bawac34618 was pretty much right on, though. Republicans have pretty much taken over Oklahoma. This is especially true for state wide offices. Also Oklahoma was the only state where all its counties did not vote in favor of Obama, so it's called the reddest state in the union.

Republican rule has caused support for education to plunge. As proof of that, even though more money was coming in from the lottery and casinos, state funding for education was cut more by a percentage rate than in any other state since 2008. This is in large part what Republicans mean when they say they believe in making government smaller. If you believe it's wrong to make government smaller this way, then don't vote for a Republican in 2016. Boren wouldn't be talking about the need to raise the state sale tax by a penny had Republicans given higher priority to funding education.
