I am moving there soon and I am trying to figure out if a house that we are looking at is in a bad area of town. The police said it is illegal for them to tell me what areas of the city are high in crime. The street I am looking at is
SW Cherokee, Lawton, OK 73505. I really appreciate any help.

No, that address is in the Crystal Hills neighborhood and is decent. I have friends that live there and it's pretty mellow, like most places on the west side of town.

I doubt it's illegal for them to tell you, crime maps are usually public info. Try this page I found on the lawton pd website. Crimes by Zone (http://www.lawtonpd.com/statistics/zonestats.htm - broken link)

That part of town is really quiet.

Only thing I can see as a bad thing is the railroad tracks near there.

I just left Lawton and would live NE side of Gore BLVD (country) we rented a two story townhouse 3 bedroom 2 baths for $895.00 a month. NE Bell is a family friendly area, which is right next to the best High School in Lawton (Macarther High school) and also in the area of the best Elementary School in Lawton (Carriage Hills). I also think this area is the most safe as far as crime (the places they tell you to stay away from in the Military). My kids loved the schools and the area and so did we...close to the water park which is GREAT! It's also close but far enough away from Cache Rd which is where EVERYTHING is at shopping wise. The streets around the mall and some streets off Cache I heard were bad...but I didn't think the crime was worse than any other place....in a 5 month span I recall hearing about one burglary and one bar fight. Hope this helped!

If you are interested I am selling a 4 bedroom on the NE side. The address is 106 NE Babbitt Lawton OK. You could buy it and your payment would be less than rent. It's a remodel with four bedrooms and a huge backyard with a shade tree. It is walking distance to Pioneer Park Elm and within the Macarthur School District and close to a neighborhood park and the water park. It sounds like what you are looking for. (580) 574-0563

I like living in Lawton. The schools need improvement but other than that....we enjoy the mall, restaurants, museum, parks and movies. The Vaska is an old movie theater with discounted tickets and only one screen but we get a kick out of it.
