Just got off the phone with my friend who is a game warden near Lawton and was told that Oklahoma deer season kill totals are WAY BELOW normal numbers for this point in the season. There are still about 3.5 weeks of archery season left and a special doe gun season. I noticed less deer activity this season, but thought maybe it was just my lack of hunting skills lol...but apparently it's statewide.

Any hunters out there have ideas why the numbers are down?

My thoughts surround the aggressive push to harvest does. You can legally harvest 6 deer in one season, all of which can be doe. I also believe you can kill a 7th doe in the special doe season and it not count against your 6 deer limit, but I could be mistaken. Of course not everyone limits out.

Any one else have a theory?

I don't follow deer hunting seasons, so can't even speculate about the downturn, but what about deer sightings from you city dwellers this year? About a month or so ago, I saw 3 small deer one night in a front yard on my street in Stillwater. Such sightings aren't common, but happen from time to time every year. I think the deer like the cover of the two wooded areas off both sides of my street. Fortunately, I've never come real close to hitting a deer with my car in Stillwater.
