Hi yall. I was wondering if anyone knows how the job market in and around Guymon is. Is it fairly easy to find a decent paying job in this area?

If you like pigs...there is work. Oil and Gas is still going so, there is work but, pay is marginal. Housing is peaking there too. Good Luck

Guymon's economy is based on oil, ranching, and agriculture, so there are a lot of service and some administrative jobs in those areas, especially in smaller businesses that provide transportation, equipment, fertilizers, storage, construction, and other services to those industries. For example, ConocoPhillips has a smallish refinery, the Hansford Plant, located about 20 miles south of town just across the border with Texas. That’s where my father worked until his retirement.

600,000 head of cattle are raised within 25 miles of the Seaboard meatpacking plant in Guymon, but meatpacking jobs have gone mostly to poor, mostly Mexican immigrants, who work for a lot less than what the locals were paid when I lived there (Class of 70--Go Tigers!). In those days, Guymon was a town of about 7,000. You could count the Latino faces in town, quite literally, on both hands, and there was not a single African-American family in residence. Things change, and it has grown to almost 11,000 today, nearly all of that growth being immigrant labor, and there are a number of blacks, including the high school football coach. (A recent AP story about the influence of meatpacking on the region says "The poverty rate also was halved in Guymon, Oklahoma . . . " but fails to mention that Guymon had almost no poverty to begin with. The panhandle, in fact, has always been a comparatively wealthy “donor” region of the state, paying far more in taxes than it gets back in state services.)

Other likely employers include the public school districts--Guymon, Goodwell, Optima, and a little further up the road--Hooker; nearby Panhandle State University, in Goodwell, ten miles southwest; the City of Guymon itself, and various utility companies that provide services to the city. There are also two banks, numerous retail outlets and restaurants, including Wal-Mart, and several motor inns.

Below is a list I quickly cobbled together of typical employers from various public internet directories. It is by no means comprehensive but might provide a place to start looking. Also the City of Guymon has jobs listed at City of Guymon, Oklahoma, as well as URL links to larger area employers. Good luck--it’s a nice town.

Guymon is just starting to feel the economic crunch.Several of the oilfield companies are laying off workers. The pig plant is going strong as well as the beef plant in Liberal,KS,45 mins away. Most other jobs pay minimum wage. Not many places to shop,2 hour drive to decent shopping,a few fair restaurants, small library, lots of rodeo stuff. Mostly polarized community.Lots of churches for each ethinic group,a couple of bars.Very windy all year, hot as hades in the summer and pretty mild, dry winters. If all you want to do is work then you won't die from boredom.Prices are high as everything has to be trucked in.
