IMO, this has far more to do with self-proclaimed "Baptists" and little to do with them being from Oklahoma.

Unfortunately, all too often hard-and-fast religious belief, particularly one as closed off and elitist as that of Baptists, leads to self-righteousness, sanctimoniousness and judgmentalism.

I don't know what they came from, probably some self started evangelical bunch, but when I was in California as a wiccan I got actually stopped by these people. They were just as self-righteous and judgemental and made a practice of openly harrrassing people. It doesn't have to do with where you're from just what's in your head. Nobody has bothered me once here. If they don't approve I can live with that, since its all our choice and they choose the negative if so.

My dad's family were Babtist, southern Babtist I assume. When he went visiting he was distrubed to find out one of the kids was being excluded from the family. They had beer in the frig. They were very anti booze of any kind or amount. So he made sure to visit them and they took him around to see the place, then he went back to visit the others and they said nothing. I guess that is why my dad never wanted to live in Alabama after he got out.

I plan to go see his family one day with my son, now the sons of grandsons probably, and will not pretend to be christian and if they have a problem, then its just too bad. I'm hoping things have improved over a few generations.

I have to wonder......how many self-proclaimed "Baptists" do you see on this forum (or any forum) pizzing and moaning about you like you're pizzing and moaning about them?

None?

That's what I thought.

Hypocrisy!

There are plenty if one knows where to look and the key words. P&O Forum is a good place to begin.

I don't agree that dogma creates elitist individuals. I believe people create an illusion that XYZ is more _____ and therefore is deserving of being more socially elevated than say ABC. Even though ABC is the seed/parent of XYZ. If you live in a small town, especially if it's rural, you get to watch the posturing between the power brokers whose only agenda is to control the other. In some towns one church may have a great influence over local politics. This is especially true where there is only one type of dogma versus many.

For instance I grew up in a town where I could go to any mainstream U.S. Christian church, as well as Anglican or Federalist, Eastern or Western Catholic, Ba'Ha or Jewish Temples, AME, and a dozen more I was not familiar with. These towns are more likely to be politically influenced. And then there is the little rural town caught in the middle of the power brokers. Whoever is NOT in power is gracious (on the surface) to the other while they plan for the next frontal attack.

Go to the religous forum here on CD for first class pizzing and moaning. Are you serious with that statement?? We had a guy tell us there would be NO catholics in heaven. Only baptists. And not all baptists. Only Free Will Baptists. And yet you call Hypocrisy! HA! My god, man, get out a little more.

And our little town opened up a really nice liquor store right downtown. And we laugh at the way people will literally park around the next block. Not all of course. And those type still go to the next town over 10 miles away to get their licquor. That is so strange.

Not none--tons.

Although I can't vouch for them all being Baptists...many of them may be more zealous, fundamentalist wackadoos from some other denomination.

If you want to see scads of these ultra-religious types "pizzing and moaning" I can direct you to a dozen forums like this where it is the norm.

Or, you could take a few minutes to peruse the "Politics and Other Controversies" or "Religion and Spirituality" sections of this here CD forum and get your fill of it.
