ERS/USDA Data - Population change 1990-2010 for Oklahoma
All well and good and I would never try to refute hard data (as you did with some of mine in past exchanges ), it's more the attitude and tone of some of your posts....it seems like you're looking at it like "Oh those poor dregs of society are pulling the state of Oklahoma's economics/culture down."

They're people. I think they deserve a tad bit of dignity/respect when they're referred to, especially if they're elderly. That's just me.

Cheers.

Ever been to just west of Foyil, on the county roads between Foyil and Oologah Lake? Disappointing, is about the nicest way I could describe it.

Oklahoma has several really nice little towns. It also has some really pathetic, dying towns filled with meth heads and registered sex-offenders, blights on the state.

Its really depressing how a lot of the locals seem to reject education and economic development as some sort of horrible plot from the elite to change their lives.

If I were a non-local I would be very weary about going down there willy-nilly. Yes there are some great friendly folks, but in general the local populace is not too fond of outsiders. Take it from personal experience. Its often been said that Little Dixie is its own mini-state and they operate by a different set of rules.
Oh yeh, your status is about the most insightful I've seen on City-Data. As a Sooner fan it is obvious you are very wise.

That game was one of the funnest I've watched in ages!

I guess I'd mention Maud. I was in Maud a month or so ago. It is the birthplace of Wanda Jackson- the "Queen of Rockabilly." In her honor, the town of Maud has named their main street Wanda Jackson Blvd. I wanted to take a picture of a street sign. This was my last night in OK before I was returning to Jersey the next day. I pulled up to a sign that wasn't near private property and started to snap a few photos. Some guys, who were hanging out at a convenience store parking lot accross the street came over and asked what I was doing. I tried to be friendly and explain. They said they were tired of people from NJ coming in just to take photos like they were wildlife or something. I guess they saw my plates. Deciding that descretion was the better part of valor- especially on a dark street late at night, I wished them a good night and hightailed it out of Maud.

I've seen the last of Maud.

Oklahoma is the Native State. It has the second largest Native American population in America. It is also a natural state with grand lakes, beautiful streams, rolling hills, and abundant wildlife as well as red earth and miles of dust - depending where you live.

Oklahoma is a poor state as much as Alabama and Georgia are poor states. It has highs and lows, good and bad, but by-and-large there are far more worse places to live in the United States. Oklahoma is the only place I would live twice. Despite the negatives it has some wonderful positives if you know where to look.

I think it's terrible the way you categorize people in or from small towns as being un-educated, insestious and missing teeth. How degrading. Who placed you on the judgemental pedistal? I've been in the US Navy 22 years and am from Fairfax Oklahoma. Yes... A small town in the middle of no where. I also own a home in Virginia Beach and purchased a Farm outside of Fairfax. I like many have been a positive contributor to every city or town that I have had the opportunity to live in. I have a BS with Major in Biology as does my wife. Missing teeth, making moonshine, pickin' a banjo, incest, etc?? How dare you make judgement like that. Take a look arround, you may be amazed at what you see once you open your eyes!

Default Are you kidding?

I hope that was a joke.* I never lived on a res, per se, but I lived amongst the Nine Tribes for many years. I was very happy. I was in many homes, and I learned many things. Some of the things I wittnessed made me very sad and some made me very mad. I don't know what the answer is, I wish I did.

Talequah!
