We are being presented with a great job opportunity in Atoka, OK and are trying to figure out it the area would be a good fit for us. We currently live in WV, about 30 minutes from two larger cities. We have access to shopping, wal mart, target, and grocery options. We have a 4 year old and are looking for good schools, public or private. We are generally conservative in our views.

We are wondering a few things:

1. What is the Atoka area like?
2. Where would be a good place to live? (Willing to commute up to 30 minutes)
3. What is shopping, eating, grocery shopping like in the area? WHat about the area you would reccomend living?
4. Any general thoughts that might help us?

Atoka is your typical small town.

I'm not certain, but the population is about 3,000, though it's the county seat of Atoka County. Shopping is somewhat limited, as you might imagine for a town that size, though there is a Walmart (it's not a 24 hour super-center, though). Dining options are limited too, running roughly from McDonalds to a local Mexican food place with really bland enchiladas.

There's a lot of through town traffic on US 69/75 and OK-3. The residents are mostly white, lower middle class to poor and generally conservative in their viewpoints. There is a local drug and crime problem, but where is that not the case?

The local hospital amounts to little more than a clinic. It only has 25 beds. The school system is the largest in the county and draws students from just about the whole county, except for those in the towns of Caney, Stringtown and Tushka, which have their own small systems. I can't speak to how good the school system is, but it's probably not much different from anyplace else.

The economy is mostly based upon ranching and farming as there is little industry since Ethan Allen Furniture left for China. It's just a country town.

For more shopping and dining opportunities, you have McAlester about 40 miles to the North, Tulsa at roughly 100 miles and Durant, OK to the south about 30 miles.

Durant is one of the fastest growing areas in the country. Un-employment is down, new business and industry is pouring in and so are people. The home construction is booming, though sales of existing houses is down a little. There is virtually no rental properties available. Property values have gone up, though, because so many Texans want to get out of Texas. The Choctaw Casino employs something like 1500 people alone (there's also a small casino in Atoka). The school system is excellent and it's the home of a regional medical center and Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

If you don't like Atoka, perhaps a 30 mile commute from Durant might be an option. The road between them is all 4 lane, though it's rough as a cob in some places and the won't plow or sand it in the winter.
