I've been looking at Amazon and there are pages of them, but I don't know what is most important to look for, and do have a spending limit.

It will be for inside the house. I'd like to be able to charge my cell as well.

What is S.A. M.E.? I like the idea of not having it go off if somewhere three counties away there is a watch. I'm looking for the most important features for making it useful and reliability. Any brands which are not well made?

Not sure what questions to ask. And thank you for the help.

S.A.M.E. is Specific Area Message Encoding. Basically lets you set specific alerts down to the county you're in.

Part of the encoding is end of message (EOM) but as far as I know only the Sangean CL-100 actually stops the alert at EOM.

It is very important to be able to disable alerts you aren't interested in because there are about 80 different events.

However, in my experience the county is still too broad so I actually don't use one.

I would suggest a couple of things but I am no expert. Get one you can program by county and by type of weather alerts you want to recieve. We had one many years ago that would go off if there was just a thunderstorm watch anywhere within 150 miles. I got so tired of it going off when it wasn't important I threw it away.

The other thing I would suggest is one that is easy to program. Ours now is so frustrating I won't use it. I've got to go buy one that is more user friendly.

As an alternative to the weather radio you might look into borrowing my dog. Every time a storm starts coming in he wants inside the house. He's pretty accurate with his predictions.

One of my cats absolutely vanishes underneath something just before the first hint of thunder and won't reappear until its all done. My dog just runs around and barks at it, silly dog...

I bought mine a few years back and after the first storm it was unplugged and has not been used since.

You can select the counties you want but you can't set the level of alert you want. Sucks getting woken up at 1am because there is a thunder storm watch..... really a watch? I don't really care about a watch... Severe Thunderstorm warning and tornado warning would be fine, but it went off with every watch.

After all those scary storms in Woodward, I bought the WR300. I was lucky to be in Southern OK, away from the storms. I can write a short review sometime if you'd like.

I downloaded the weather radio app for my iphone from News 9. It seems really easy to program exactly what you want to be notified of and you don't have to tell it where you cause it's on the phone so it always knows where it is. I guess I'll know more after the first storm.
