We are moving next month to Chickasha ( got a decent rental from a family member) until maybe mid May when we will be buying a house around OKC. Our family lives around OKC so we will be commuting there alot i guess . Is it a bad drive to OKC area from there ? Is it a half way decent place to live ( W Chickasha ave). I'm not finding too much info online. The reason we are moving there is that nobody wants to rent sort term and we just need a place for 5 months tops. Any info on Chickasha would be helpful.

You had posted something similar on the OKC forum, but I'll go ahead and say the same thing. I can't say much for Chickasha, except for in general the town is okay but a little rough around the edges. If its a short term rental you will be fine, but as I mentioned before, I would keep my visit there as brief as possible.

Not sure where you are working, but you are looking at 80 miles roundrip from Chickasha to downtown OKC. Part of the trip is on the HE Bailey Turnpike so you will have to factor in costs for that. Traffic will be free flowing until you get to about 240, then pretty much any direction you are going to hit congestion, especially if you continue north on 44. I'm not sure if you are familiar with OK weather but since you be making that drive during the winter and spring months make sure to keep an eye on things. It seems that the SW quaudrant of the state gets the worst weather IMO.

If I can ask, you couldn't find any short term rentals a bit closer to town? I'm sure you're getting a good deal with your family memeber. But if you could be open to getting into a 6 month lease, and just throwing them the 6th month of payment when you leave, you may find something. Yes I know its a waste, but given the commute and house hunting trips, with gas prices, tolls, and stress it may be worth it. I would sit down and do a personal cost benefit analysis to see if its worth it or not to live out that far.

Try google earth and search Chickasha, OK. You can go down to street level and see everything from that perspective, the good the bad, and the ugly. That was my hometown for many years and I still have many relatives in and around Chickasha.

We tried finding a 6 month lease, everyone wanted a year lease. Yeah the being 40 miles out of OKC is kinda scaring me, but i have commited to rent the Chickasha house until May. I'm giving up a county maintenance job and going there blind. We are just ready to go, we were tied down here helping take care of my mother in law and now are free to move. We got our house on market here, hopefully goes quick, as we are gonna be in Chickasha midle of January regardless. I'm going there blind, no job prospects, but some savings and dont think i would like the drive to OKC for work. Maybe i can find a "temp" job close by till we buy near OKC and then look for a real job. Thaks for all the advice. I'm really nervous about the move.

I've always thought Chickasha is really pretty. The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma brings in some interesting professors, students, and events, and you may be able to find employment there. I was just driving around and exploring and happened to be there on the day the University was having a sidewalk art exhibition. So fun! I'd love to live in Chickasha!

If we give up on our small towns and small cities just because they're getting a little shabby, then they will only get worse, and shame on us.

Get ready for some cultural shock. If you're from the east coast, ready for some good ol' rednecks!
Chickasha is not a bad place, but it's not that great, either, IMHO. The job opportunities there are not as plentiful as they used to be. But, that seems to be everywhere. The oil industry is kind of picking up around there, but that is always iffy. Boom and Bust.

If you get a job in Oklahoma City, the quickest and shortest road to take is the H.E. Bailey turnpike. The toll is $1.25 each way. There are other routes, but they take longer.

When you move there, and you like BBQ, ya gotta try Jake's Rib. Excellent ribs. And if you go away hungry, it's your own fault

Yeah we just need a change, i will miss the seafood as we live on the coast, but we live about 5 miles from the beach and never go, let the tourist have it. We love BBQ, have some killer places here i will miss. We love the mustard base sauces, i will have to bring a case with me. Our house got a contract today so we are happy, moving in about 3 weeks. Will try Jake's Rib for sure, but as long as theres a Walmart, cable tv and internet, I'll be happy and NO traffic ! Oh i heard there is a DQ there also !!!

Yes, it's one of the only DQ's in Oklahoma! There is also a pretty good Mexican restaurant in the downtown area.

Chickasha isn't too bad. If you get bored- with the turnpike it's easy to get to OKC, also pretty easy to get to Norman via highway 9.
