Recently my job has require traveling the length of I40. I can not help but notice how rough I40 has become. At times I find my self with a death grip on the steering wheel, just trying to hang on. I actually had my shocks checked because the bounce was so drastic at time. Shocks were good. I find my self exhausted after traveling from western ok to eastern ok trips and its from the dang rough road. There are sections of I40 that are not too bad but I would estimate that at least 75% of my travel is not good. It seems like the sections of road that are concrete are the worst, and sections that have been paved over are at least a little better. Thats my rant. I40 sucks

It's been 2 or 3 years ago but was surprised, to pay a toll to get on the highway from OKC to Lawton and was surprised to see the road in less than decent condition. On the bright side, I-35 from OKC north to the Kansas border tends to be in smooth, decent shape.

Did you also notice that there are very few rest areas? Most states have them every 40 miles or so. You have to take your chances of finding a gas station that is open and hope you can get back on the interstate easily. I pull a travel trailer a lot, and rest areas work a lot better than gas stations for getting on and off the interstate.

I only travel the part between MWC and Yukon with any regularity. I haven't noticed roughness, but OMG, the part that's still, STILL under constructions in the downtown OKC area is hideous. It goes from 6 lanes to 2, just bam, and if you aren't in the right lane, you'll end up in Wichita or Amarillo. During rush hour type travel times, I avoid it like the plague. Reno from downtown going west is much better.

It's long haul from the Texas border to the MO/AR border regardless of how you drive it. 412 from Tulsa to the AR border is a much better drive. 160 from MO to North of Tulsa is better too. If your stops are on I-40, it's very difficult to avoid it. Struts may fair better than shocks.

That toll was in place back in the late 90's, when I drove from Altus to Lawton and then took I40 to OKC and the drive was smooth. I was surprised however to find that the speed limit was 70 - 75?...something not seen back in those days.....don't know what it is nowdays.
And I also remember the drive from OKC to Wichita on I35 was very pleasant.
