Politics aside, Michigan is a great state, btw.
No, you can't make it without federal money. Your state, much like mine, receives much more in federal aid then your residents pay in. My own state receives $1.53 for every dollar we send to the federal govt. The truth be told, the blue states are the ones who are keeping the red states going. Tx. is the exception, but if you figure in the FEMA aid, the medicare and Medicaid fraud, that may even be a wash. There is a lot of info, including maps, that will show you that it's the red states that suck out of the federal govt. Yes, the employment situations are better in our states, but part of it has to do with the huge tax breaks and other incentives our states give to companies, in hopes that they'll relocate to our state. Another factor is the lack of unions and the promise that they can pay people minimum wage and still get plenty of people to work for them.

I love OK., but if the people who are elected into office want to make cuts, those cuts need to be made in the state they represent. I'm not only referring to OK politicians. I'm including my own state politicians in that comment.

Hello Jammie,

I was surprised at how many of the local farmers receive $$ from the government. Guess they are red until they see green.

As for Senator Coburn, he has cancer and I don't think he is up for office after this run.

If you had the vaguest idea how farm bills came about, you probably wouldn't be commenting.

The government's involvement with farms and farmers was FORCED on farmers. They did not want it, they did not need it.

Put in a way even liberals can understand, let's say you own a car, clear and free. The government decides to forbid you from driving it 4 days, 3 of which are days you need it to drive to work. Driving that car is your only way to get to work. Being at work is your ONLY source of income. You have a family to feed. Your children will die. Then the government decides to pay your income for those 3 days it forbids you to go to work. You would much prefer to go to work and be productive, but at least now you can feed your children.

If you are capable of logical thought, now you can see what happened way back when I was a kid and my dad and all our farmer relatives and friends were MORTIFIED, HORRIFIED, and SICK about the government sticking its nose in our business.

Largely because of this forced government involvement, family farms slowly withered. Giant corporatations took over the business of farming. They got bigger and bigger because of chemicals, growth hormones, and things you really don't want to know about. Your stinking, filthy government at work. Enjoy!

Haha and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Considering the fact that one that was voted in office in my state had been a partial ranch owner and when their family's millions in subsidies came to light, suddenly had no part in a ranch that, "Now belongs to my brothers...", you have to wonder about those things, don't you?

That's not to mention the Lewis n Clark River project or our huge forest that is govt. owned and cared for along with our aging population. But I'm off topic since this is about OK.

I truly am sorry to hear about Sen. Coburn. I often didn't agree with his politics, but I do think he's an honest and good person who did what he thought was right, even if it wasn't. At least he didn't get fanatical like some elected officials have. That was one thing I'd always admired about the Okies. Some may have views that lean way too far to the right for me, but at least most can be kind and sane about it and TRY to understand the views of others. I'd actually been somewhat right leaning, too until the new group took over the party.

Dale, I also remember the "soil bank acres", as it was called back then. What is happening now is on a much grander scale. You've got givers and you've got takers and since the reps and senators in our states continue begging for the money when they are in DC., we have plenty of takers with their hands out waiting for that money to "Come home." It's always easy to blame the govt. for giving money while we stand there with our hands out begging for the money.

The first cut Oklahoma needs to make is quit spending so much tax money to put people in prison. Do we really need to be one of the most highly imprisoned places on earth, especially since it isn't complemented by being of the most crime free places? Texas has seen the light on the serious need for justice and corrections reform, so much so that state recently had to close a prison.

But maybe he has, but I don't follow political news enough to have known. If not, of course, I will bash him for refusing to do what is right. Since he won't do it, I can at least be thankful he is willing to step aside, so someone hopefully will try to do something.
Sure go ahead and bash without facts, makes perfect sense to me. Both sides of the isle do it. What a great country!

But I still don't know of any bills that Sen. Coburn authored and got passed. What do you think you are paying him to do? To simply cast his votes on bills in the U. S. Senate?

Your the one that bashed him, have a reason to do so by being informed. I'm not going to do the research for you he isn't my senator he is yours. Hint look up who developed the specifics of AIDS help for Africa to name just one. Another hint waste in agencies is the responsibility of the admin and its agency leadership, congress can cut budgets and point out bad appointments and provide oversight.

I want fewer bills, not more. Coburn's role has been to try to reign in the incredible stupidity that our current generation seems intent on inflicting upon itself.

LOL! Nice rant. I agree on the loss of small family farmers in America, not just Oklahoma. I think it stinks even worse when Rockefellers and other large farms receive $$$$. Here in our county, there is a long list of those who receive $$. I love the part where you say "Put in a way even liberals can understand" since that comment helps you feel superior. The loss of the family farm is nothing new.

So was it " Your stinking, filthy government at work" back in 1933 too?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_farm_bill

*"The farm bill was first created during the Great Depression to give financial assistance to farmers who were struggling due to an excess crop supply creating low prices, and also to control and ensure an adequate food supply.[4] The first farm bill, known as the Agriculture Adjustment Act (AAA), was passed by Congress in 1933 as a part of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal.[5] The bill allowed farmers to receive payment for not growing food on a percentage of their land as allocated by the United States Secretary of Agriculture.

According to the Congressional Research Service, nine bills between 1965 and 2002 are "generally agreed" to be farm bills;[1] the 2008 farm bill is the tenth.

Food and Agricultural Act of 1965
Agricultural Act of 1970
Agricultural and Consumer Protection Act of 1973
Food and Agriculture Act of 1977
Agriculture and Food Act of 1981
Food Security Act of 1985
Food, Agriculture, Conservation, and Trade Act of 1990
Federal Agriculture Improvement and Reform Act of 1996
Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002
Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008"

Enjoy!
