I started with the cell phone thing because of the kids. I bought one for me and a second one for them to share -- whichever kid went away (movie, friends house, overnighter), he or she got the phone. Eventually, they both were out at the same time enough for them each to have one. Doug has one, but he threatens on a daily basis to throw it through the window.

I find that like my teenagers, I actually text more than I call on the phone. I'll tell you it was a real asset when Scott started driving. When I was late coming home as a teenager, my parents walked the floor. On the other hand, because of cell phones I just call to see where he is. The rule always was "if you don't pick up when I call, you lose the phone." Only had to cancel Scott's phone service for a couple of weeks one time.

But on the other hand, it tends to make you paranoid. If I call one of them, and they don't pick up right away, I assume they're dead. My parents didn't think I was dead until it got to be 4 in the morning

I had to have one after DH was bedridden, so he could contact me if there was an emergency. Now it's all I have - my kids, friends, and all financial whatsits all have the same number, and I pay a flat rate so I can call/get calls from NYC to Alaska and everywhere in between. That flat rate seems pretty high, but when I got my last bill there was nearly 5,000 minutes on it - and if you have a cell phone, you have a pretty good idea what that would cost! And probably 1/3 of that was wasted being on hold.

Not until I got AT&T. Then it seemed like everyone I knew had lives of their own! My son is out of cell range most of the year, my daughter is working 2 jobs and going to school full time - and the rest of them either have jobs or families. I do have to say I think my sister in law got tired of talking to me after awhile, she kept passing me off to my brother - who is fairly deaf.

Once in awhile I have a 3-4 way conversation(voice, not text) with some of my family on "Yahoo instant Messenger". it's free and if you have IM and a microphone you have it too.

How many didn't know about that?

All of us on this forum could have a voice conversation.

We should set one up.

Bite you toungue, knave! We anti-socialists prefer the deathly cold quietness of cyber world.

I only use the IM for Don's grandbaby cam. Don can't type very well, and every once in a great while he gets a msg to family cam.

Not the kind of wicked evil cam some people engage in....

Default Gonna get the feet wet - - finally

Hey yawl. Have been "lurking" (as someone else put it) since Feb 2008. I feel like I know everyone here.. Left Tulsey town in '95 thinking of doing the retire thing in the desert not ever thinking things would have gone the direction they have in SoCal. Sooo, trapped by current market and not sure what to do about house, have just been fantasizing about getting back to OK. Don't want city life anymore so thinking more around Tenkiller area. Have followed so many "pioneers" on here, CG and JESS primarily. Have enjoyed all info from everyone, PD, C-47 (another gutsy move) LR, RB (whoo-eee), MK, GP, "Shoes" - actually everyone - too many to list. I start at the OKIE FORUM and go down the entire list and gleen great info from everyone about all areas there. I really enjoyed Tulsa for the ten years I lived there (Brookside and Swan Lake) but want Chickens, and maybe a goat, this time around. Heading towards 70 years old going 100 mph is scary, but gonna do it anyway. Gotta still do a lot of stuff in yard after work (still workin' - YUK) and seem to barely have time to read this stuff much less answer. So hope you keep it up and I'll jump in when I can. Can't wait to get back. Thank you all for being so cool, informative and funny.

I said originally that this would be my last great adventure, being 60+ and legally blind, but one never knows what life has in store. And if I should make it to be 95, I'd rather have a lot of interesting memories to look back on, rather than a list of "what if's" or "why didn't I's" to think about.
