I don't bash Windoze...
I make a living fixing Windoze.

MACs are more expensive to buy and get software for,
but since they have a smaller market share than PCs, very few
people bother to write viruses for them, so they may be a good
choice for casual users... They are somewhat limited in variety
of apps and utils.

I prefer PC hardware, running Linux for day to day usage.
I only boot into Windoze when providing support for my clients,
or if I want to play Battlefield II with my son and the international
group we play with.

Windoze out of the box requires a 3rd party Anti-Virus, firewall, and multiple anti-spyware utilities to protect it... Then, you need to make a few registry mods,
and turn off some default services to make it a little more secure.

Linux is secure by design... Right out of the box with a fresh install.

I could go into a huge dissertation on the subject, but I think I'll just go get another cup of coffee instead.

The ones I like might make your eyes cross...
Let me do a little searching and see if I can find a few that are
more appropriate for you. Or maybe Synopsis will beat me to it.

This sounds like something I will try.

I might like to have my eyes crossed once in a while.
I have been on computers since around 88, so I am not a complete dummy.

I have found myself tinkering by necessity. I also found some computer tech guys at our work are not that much more knowledgable than I am.

Techs learn a lot of tricks of the trade from other techs. And one tech took a few college courses then transferred into his new position.

The real tech is my friend from Pakistan. He works for the feds. He can run circles around any college graduate.

Well, unfortunately, at the moment I am stuck with AOL. I originally signed on with AOL to make it easier for Uncle Don to learn the internet.

I was blocked again from going anywhere on the net!

this is the error message I keep getting.

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

could not figure out why AOL was firewalled and ultimately had to re-download AOL 9.0, luckily I had a disk buried under my computer crap. Geez, what a hassle.

Why do I get a new welcome screen everyso often? I think I must be running more than one version of AOL.

Anyway, I fixed it myself again and feel happy as a New Hampshire snowman. Especially with a four day weekend coming up.

Guess I never did say thank you to CG and Synopse for the all the tech help you have given thus far. A big okie slap on the back for the both of you's.

Just different, inefficient and a resource hog.
It uses more resources serving you ads than for what you actually want to do.

Good thing it wasn't buried amongst the disco shoes!

AOL updates itself also...

Obviously it's fixed or you couldn't have told us that!
Glad you got it back under control.

The help hasn't even begun yet!

If you haven't done so already....
Go read about "msconfig".

You've probably done this before, but it's a simple place for regular folk to start tweaking for performance... Found a nice basic link on this:

http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_xp.html

Check out the "startup" tab... By un-checking the things that you don't NEED to start at boot, you'll boot faster and save a few resources.

I'm sure Peggy and Colleen can't wait to try it!

Ah yes, msconfig is a great little tool. You know what, I just started to go to my "run" box but realize that Vista doesn't have that feature. Dang it Windows is always trying to one up themselves!

We had a notebook crash one day and had to buy one right away and it came with Vista. After fighting with it for a week, I took it to a tech guy, had him wipe the drive and install XP. It's worked fine ever since.

That's the correct fix for a Vista infection.
(REMOVE Vista and install XP or PCLOS... Or both in a dual-boot configuration.)
I've done many on request.

The REAL problem with Vista is that you need a minimum of 2GB RAM, a super fast bus and 512MB video... Then Vista only runs half as slow as XP.

We won't even begin to discuss stability and compatibility issues..

So, what things do we NEED to start at boot?

I have so many on mine its freaking mind-boggling.

And while on this subject of tweaking (non-meth variety),

I had a tech at work tell me my computer was running too many processes.

TIP: When I was unsure what a certain startup program was, I simply typed it in to my search (eg. ifgxtray.exe) and it would show something like: "ifgxtray.exe: What is it and what does it do?" Then I could read up on whether it was safe to take off my startup list.

GOOD JOB, CG/and SynOP.

I think this thread is great. I like the title, Okie.

I have a Dell computer as you all know, and now I am getting a blue screen once in a while that says that my computer crashed and so it is saving data to not harm my computer. I call Dell, and two different people gave me two different methods to cure the problem. A week later and it begins again. Any ideas?
