We will be transferring to the area early next year and would like some recommendations on where to live. We are late 30's, no kid's, 2 dog's, we enjoy good food with large beer selection Our budget is around $1400 and we would like a house outside the city. Any suggestions on where to start looking?

If you mean by outside the city, a suburb, then it's Edmond, in order to be close to all the cool attractions that the north side of OKC offers, such as the zoo, horse races, casino, museums, Quail Springs Mall, Penn Square Mall, Paseo art district, Asian district where there is a huge Asian food market, and Hefner Lake Park.

If you mean living in the countryside, then living near scenic and historicial Route 66, just to the northeast of OKC, would be cool, yet still fairly near to those OKC attractions.

I'd look into either Piedmont or Deer Creek. There's been a lot of growth in those areas the last several areas.

Where are ya'll relocating from?

Unless things have changed since I was in Edmond, most of the bars there do not have a wide variety of beers. The beer "snobs" have to go to midtown (McNellies) or Bricktown for a bar or restaurant with more than 3 micro-brew choices. You should also be warned that New Belgium beers are not available in Oklahoma STILL . There's some good choices though from Prairie to Coop and Dead Armadillo.

not sure if you've heard, but the 'beer scene' should improve a little bit in Edmond. I'm only 20 and turn 21 in November, so I can't really comment on the bar scene in Edmond, but using common sense, it sucks.

Beer house concept may move in downtown - The Edmond Sun: News

PS, we also have Skinny Slims Edmond now.

I live by Belle Isle across from Penn Square Mall. Its a great location. Its close to some decent bars like flyingcat mentioned. If you don't have kids, no reason to live in Edmond. People live there for the schools. If you want to get to know other people such as your neighbors, renting a house may not be a good idea. I don't like apartment living, but the advantage is you might meet people who also aren't from here, which could mean instant friends as you'll be able to relate much better to them. There's some decent newer apartment complexes on the North side off of Memorial Rd and May Ave. I looked there and almost rented there.

Something to be ready for is people are not inclusive here. They'll be friendly to your face, but if they haven't known you their whole life, you won't be in their little circle of friends. Anyway, I rent a house. I like the house and neighborhood a lot, but in the 2 years I've lived here, I have one good friend. The only other people I know and occasionally do social things with are people I work with. If you have ties to Oklahoma, it will be easier for you. If not, I doubt you'll like it here. I sure don't.

Mustang and Choctaw are also places where people choose to live. When I lived in Oklahoma City, I knew many who did not grow up there. It seemed to me even those who did grow up there are very welcoming to new people, although I realize the naysayers don't see it that way. The Newcomers Club was very active back then and I presume still is. I was married and by joining, we quickly had a wide circle of friends. Our social calendar expanded quickly.

Considering that the City Council in Edmond was bought and paid for by Walmart (Reasors Grocery was rejected because of "traffic"), I doubt the beer house will go through. I will say that it would be a fit in Norman.

Skinny Slims has a decent beer menu for Oklahoma but if the OP is from Denver, they will think it is pretty short. It will also depend on if the micros are in bottles or on tap. The beer menu on the website didn't say so I'm assuming only the macros are.

When you say "outside the city" do you mean outside the core/dowtown parts or OKC altogether?

If its the former, I would suggest the area in and around Penn Square (South of 63rd, North of 44, West of Broadway Extension, East of Lake Hefner Parkway) You are close enough to the city and Western Ave bar/restaraunt area.

If its the latter, I would suggest the non-college parts of Norman. There is some really neat neighborhoods in Central Norman, but it depends on how much you are okay being around a ton of college kids. It's also a bit of a haul to OKC; you're commute could get long if it is north or west of downtown.

Your price range should get you something decent in either area.

Oh, and IMO skip Edmond. Its a nice suburb for families, but not maybe not the greatest for DINKS looking for neat restaraunts and beer selections.

Was Reasors actually rejected? It would've been really nice to have a Reasors here. Hopefully it still happens. It isn't just Reasors either, it's the nimbys, they are like a sickness.
