There are a lot of gay people in Tulsa that don't seem to have any issues. OKC also apparently has a fairly large gay community though its a bit more hidden. Also I don't think any of the extreme anti-gay bills that were proposed this year actually passed. However, Oklahoma is a very socially conservative state with high-emphasis placed on Christian fundamentalism and traditional values. That is the dominant culture here.

My guess is most of the trouble comes from small minded, small town people going to party in the bigger cities. They get drunk and may pick on types of people they're not used to seeing, such as gays. Today, the state legislature passed a somewhat anti-gay bill, which gives the right for pastors and churches to turn down doing gay weddings. The other anti-gay bills likely won't be passed. There's surely a few worse states to be gay, such as Alabama.

I think the majority of Oklahomans regard abortion as a personal issue, especially of the woman, and mainly people on the fringe try to make a big deal over it not being banned.

I think attitudes have become more tolerant toward toward marijuana than was the case 10 years ago when fewer people heard of what medical marijuana can be good for. By a slim margin, I think the majority would support legalizing medical marijuana should it come up for a vote in 2016. However, if some people think I'm being overly optimistic, I'm not surprised.

It's likely still a number of years before the majority will approve of legalizing rec marijuana. When the first states legalized alcohol after prohibition was repealed in 1933, it took Oklahoma 26 years to legalize it. Hopefully, if won't take that long for rec marijuana.

Oklahoma legalizing marijuana would certainly create lots of jobs. And give Texans another big reason, other than gambling at the casinos, to cross the Red River.

You don't have to be an idiot, but it would help you fit in with the straight population. Of course you could always pretend to be a normal Okie........wear out of style clothes, make sure all your restaurant meals include at least one fried food (If you could moan convincingly about where you can get a good fried stick of butter, it would help you fit in), Cheer excitedly for OU football (as long as they are winning), and go to church 4 times a week, you won't be noticed.

Oh yeah........if you get a tattoo, make sure any words are spelled phonetically.

Are you considering a move to Oklahoma or did you only make the post to get reactions? I don't think the gay community in Oklahoma City is hidden. It's common knowledge the Habana Inn is one of their main hang outs. There are many people in OKC who never go to church.

I'm guessing the OP has never been to Oklahoma.

I would think that one would be an idiot if they really believed that any of what they do in their lives matters to anyone else.
Unless of course they flaunt whatever it is they don't want others to treat them differently about, then there could be an issue.

I think in the mid to larger cities you would have no problem. I know several that live happily in a smaller mid size town. People here aren't gonna have an issue with anything like that, just don't move into some small 1200 pop town and expect a parade. I think the only way you start have trouble is if you are the type that likes to run around demanding special treatment and screwing with the status quo. Right or wrong you will get blowback if people perceive you doing that.

People here don't like people moving in from big cities and start trying to shake things up because thats the way its done back there. Doesn't matter what the issue is.

If you are into marijuana I would not move here. I was told that while we have medical marijuana for cancer, you will otherwise go to jail the first offence, and if you own your home, it is bye-bye ownership. Me, I would like it for glaucoma but don't like the high that goes along with it.

As for gays, they don't seem to have a problem here in Tahlequah, at least, not that i know of. We have a gay picnic once a year and a very far right looney Christian group will carry a sign that says "Gays go to Hades" or something strange like that. There are many people here who support the gay community, and I do, and there are ministers who do as well.

It would take you a while to find your niche in any small or large town. But since you have not replied, I wonder why?

But medical marijuana isn't allowed for any purpose in Oklahoma. However, if you're obviously sick and have a medical marijuana permit from another state when arrested in Oklahoma, the local district attorney just might take enough pity out on you to not file charges.
