Hello...I am new to this so bare with me please....We are thinking of buying a property approximately 9 miles from Poteau OK..The property has all utilities in place & septic & an older single wide mobile home that is livable while building our own house. My question is: Are you required to have a building permit to build your own house outside the city limits? Or can we build what we want by our drawings & specs. Also how hard would it be to have the wiring & rough plumbing done by a professional. thank you in advance for any replies....I am sure I haven't given enough information for a solid answer so if you need more info to help me out I will do my best...Thanks again.

A coule of things. Most rural Oklahoma does not have building permits. Some counties do, like Tulsa, Oklahoma, Rogers, etc...........the more urban impacted counties. LeFlore is NOT one of them, as I recall.

Generally you can lay your own pipe and electrical and have it signed off on by a local plumbing or electrical contractor. They will generally do as much or as little as you want. I don't believe they will turn on the water until you have a septic system installed. The mobile home power pole can be adapted to the house as well. Where I live, I have a neighbor who had a "portable building" built on site (it's pretty big) and is finishing it himself, complete with electrical and plumbing.
