My brother lives in Durant, with his wife and 3 small kids. He says he loves it . About a week ago we were discussing this very issue and we googled it and were shocked to find some website that had Durant listed as the 4th highest crime in the state. He says he's never felt safer living there. He's lived in a lot of big cities, OKC, Phoenix, Ft Worth, so he feels much safer in small town Durant.

Hi, I'm the blind-ish one with a guide dog.
I do walk everywhere and since I'm mostly blind probably have "victim" written all over me, so yeah, when I hear the crime stats in Durant and possibly having to live there it freaks me out.
Any Durant walkers out there that are always and daily more susceptible to life on the streets of Durant?
Remember...I can't jump in my car and go from nice place to nice place...I go on foot through ALL.
And, why ARE the crime stats so high if it's as safe as many of you say?
And...stray dog problems?
Just asking because my eyeballs are in a dog suit and she is pretty helpless while working. In Richmond VA it was packs of dumped dogs that would intimidate people dogs cars you name it...so loose dogs is another concern.
Whole different world this blind thing is.

My mom walks two miles alone frequently in the NW outskirts of Durant where she lives on 5 acres. She has never had an issue doing this for 45 yearsand is not near a car to jump in either. Durant is safe but as any town has areas to avoid I suppose so you neeed to pick an area to ilve that is safe to be so. Until perhaps 10 years ago, mom and my sister who lives in Durant as well did not necessarily lock doors when away if for a short trip to town eetc.

I would not worry about crime in Durant an any worse than most towns. SE oklahoma has some remote areas along the red river and with a college in town drugs arrests happen but do not impact the lives of my family living there.

So, if Durant's crime stats are high, then what is the issue? What elements are there that has caused this trend? Is it drugs, thugs, gangsters or wannabes? Is it trailer park meth heads? Southeastern Oklahoma State is there and they are NCAA division II. Some of those small colleges really scrape the bottom of the barrel for the sake of "diversity" and end up subsidizing the thug lifestyle instead of fielding a reputable team.

Durant is a safe place. Yes their are drug issues but you have to go look for it to find it. Yes college kids get in some trouble I suppose but where most people live in Durant there not a crime problem. I grew up there and have a 92 year old mom living on her own on 5 acres on the NW outskirts and a sister who raised 5 kids in Durant. Neither has experienced any crime.

The Casino may bring in some petty crime but it is not a crime ridden place. There are some moon shiners and druggies along the red river bottom historically perhaps that is part of the stats you see but again you have to look for it to find it.

Use the city-data map and select the crime index and notice that it is confined to a particular small area in Durant. Same for Ardmore.

Its mostly all drug related. If you don't live in that area, and you don't do or sell drugs then your not likely to ever have a problem. With such a small population a handful of trouble making drug users can quickly skew stats if they get into a fight and a few of them kill each other. That happens in Dallas and 2 bodies get dropped, its a drop in an ocean of people. It happens in a town of 20K or so and your murder rate climbs several points.
